Republicans routed as Democrats gain powerful new leverage over Trump for remainder of his presidency

Democrats have regained control of the US Senate, routing Republicans nationwide with historic victories that will give them powerful new leverage over Donald Trump for the remainder of his presidency.

Democrats will soon have the ability to hold up not just Trump’s legislative agenda, but also any appointments he makes to his cabinet or the federal judiciary – including the supreme court, where conservatives have a 6-3 majority.

And for fuck’s sake they have to oust Schumer and Jeffries if we want to get anything done without Israel’s interference.

Since so many Dems are still owned by corps and Israel, this majority isn’t really a majority.

We will see how much theatre they are willing to do to look like the good guys without actually doing anything or stopping trump.

      1. Not everybody is an American, so it’s (possibly) not “your life”.
      2. There are reasons to downvote something other than the first half of a headline. For instance the second half of this headline. I would be very, very careful of assuming that “US voters reject Trump’s agenda”. It’s not only GOP rhetoric to suspect that MAGA voters can’t be bothered to get off their asses if Trump is not himself on the ballot. The situation might be completely different in two years.

Trump cannot run for a third term. Unless he runs for a seat in congress or a state office, he won’t be on a ballot. Maybe as vice president but his ego wouldnct allow that.

It isn’t complete. They don’t have a super majority in the senate, so any impeachments just won’t get carried out. It’s also unclear how with all major federal agencies compromised by cronies it would be carried out.

It’s good news because it shows how incompetent Trump is at securing his own authoritarian bid, but it is not a victory for democrats. Supreme Court is still stuffed, and worse, all federal agencies have been compromised. I doubt it will simply be a lame duck presidency if federal agencies continue to follow presidential decrees while ignoring congress unless the Supreme Court tells them to. Impeachments can’t go through, Trump can still create exceptions from having to follow the law with “pre-emptive pardons”, he can still prolong signing bills until he eventually vetoes them, and any investigations preceding impeachments are going to be heavily MAGA partisan by the federal agencies in charge.

The more people hear of “Democrats winning”, the more MAGA will spin bad things as “it’s their fault, things are now much worse after they won, you can thank us because it’s not even worse”. That won’t matter right now, but in several years, people have shit memories. Democrats haven’t won yet, they’ve just made it harder for Trump after and if they get sworn in next year.

      Today we will be happy!

Later, yes, that’s how media will spin it and the foolish fall for it unfortunately. I couldn’t believe how many comments seemed to imply they thought the rapist was up for election this time. Too many don’t understand how it works, Dems can’t do whatever they want with a simple majority and no president. Hopefully enough understand to not blame them in two years, and they are able to do some good where they can. Also recognize it takes longer to build things than to destroy them. People need to plan long-term too, not expect immediate gratification in all areas of life, since that’s not realistic, responsible or mature. When they feel the artificial scarcity increase again, forced by companies that choose higher prices, lower wages and to lay-off people, they get afraid and swing the other way, for the “strong leader” who blames minorities for social problems, but hopefully not again. Today we will be happy though!

It’s nice to see people turning on trump but this doesn’t really mean anything. Almost everything trump has done ( ICE raids, Iran war, Tariffs) has been done through executive power which he still has. He’s never gotten congressional approval for any of it, nor does he need to as long as the supreme court is still stacked with GOP

The one positive is that senate seats are held for 6 years, so it’ll be easier for a dem administration that replaces trump in 2028 to pass stuff.

All caused by electing the maga scum that promised all that, revenge and retribution, grab her by the p, and they said that’s for us!! 2024 was rough. I swear Biden said he wasn’t going to run in 2020 and when he did I thought he could beat Donald again but it was clear he wasn’t the same right from the start. Replacing him was a historic fumble that should be studied. I voted as hard as I could but there are election-winning margins of people who simply won’t vote for a woman or a minority.

The goal of gerrymandering is to create a greater number of “safe” districts. The tradeoff is sacrificing margin in each, which fundamentally doesn’t work if there’s a large enough turnout.

Also, fuck the Supreme Court of Virginia.

Gerrymandering creates a damn where you can lose a few points and keep all your seats, but if you lose a few more, the damn breaks and all the seats get washed away.

        Exactly the opposite.

Instead of winning one district by a lot and losing 2, you redraw the map to win all three by a little.

The result isn’t more safe districts, it’s less.

The Democrats are very nearly as unpopular as the Republicans. People supported them not because they like the Democrats, but because they hate the Republicans. Socialism is still a necessity for a system that works for the people, and that still requires revolution. Revolution isn’t just something you do, or something that falls into your lap. It happens when there is a large, revolutionary socialist party, a class conscious working class, and a crisis in the capitalist class. We can directly contribute to the first two by getting involved with a socialist party. Both Freedom Road Socialist Organization and the Party for Socialism and Liberation have two tiers of membership, general membership which is low commitment in time and money, and cadre membership, which requires significant time and money. See which is more active near you (almost certainly PSL, but varies), and consider joining the general membership!
