I’ve been thinking of how to combine electrified reefs with open ocean aquaculture as a way of helping indigent and at-risk fisher communities to deal with climate change. Of course, there’s no technological solution to social problems, so I still have to consider the social and organizational aspects of using these technologies in indigent fisher communities.
How would you think these technologies could help coastal communities?
Artificial reefs will probably help as fish nurseries, but I was told a few times that aquaculture and fishermen are culturally very different professions and usually it is not an alternative for fishermen. Of course the fish processing on land is similar, but the process of aquaculture is more like livestock farming and apparently it is easier to get farmers to farm fish than it is to get fishermen to do so.
Fascinating I never considered that.
