Figured I’d give this another shot, since the Lemmy community keeps growing.

These are just a set of prompts intended to promote discussion and generate ideas for your setting.

If you have a suggestion for future prompts, please leave a comment. May or may not do this again next week depending on how the community responds; if you like the idea of these communal discussions or if you just want a place to talk about how cool your setting is please let me know!

This week we’re looking a bit more broadly, the settlements present within your world. This could be a sleepy village in the hinterlands, a district in a bustling city, a commune in the forest inhabited by magical creatures, any community where the citizens of your setting live and work together!

  1. What was here before?

  2. How was this settlement founded? Why, and by whom?

  3. Who has authority/power?

  4. How secure is that authority/power?

  5. What do they want?

  6. What do they have?

  7. What do they believe?

  8. Who are their opponents/rivals/enemies?

  9. What threats lurk within the area?

  10. What trades/industries have a prescense in the area?

  11. What do people do for recreation?

  12. What are the area’s chief imports/exports?

  13. What can’t a person do here/what are the local laws?

  14. Is this area wealthy? Middle-class? Poor?

I also think an interesting question is about how they are formed. The flavor of a forced settlement (prisoner transport) versus an opportunistic settlement (rich resources) is going to influence a lot of the behavioral patterns of the people.
