Figured I’d give this another shot, since the Lemmy community keeps growing.
These are just a set of prompts intended to promote discussion and generate ideas for your setting.
If you have a suggestion for future prompts, please leave a comment. May or may not do this again next week depending on how the community responds; if you like the idea of these communal discussions or if you just want a place to talk about how cool your setting is please let me know!
This week we’re looking a bit more broadly, the settlements present within your world. This could be a sleepy village in the hinterlands, a district in a bustling city, a commune in the forest inhabited by magical creatures, any community where the citizens of your setting live and work together!
-
What was here before?
-
How was this settlement founded? Why, and by whom?
-
Who has authority/power?
-
How secure is that authority/power?
-
What do they want?
-
What do they have?
-
What do they believe?
-
Who are their opponents/rivals/enemies?
-
What threats lurk within the area?
-
What trades/industries have a prescense in the area?
-
What do people do for recreation?
-
What are the area’s chief imports/exports?
-
What can’t a person do here/what are the local laws?
-
Is this area wealthy? Middle-class? Poor?

I also think an interesting question is about how they are formed. The flavor of a forced settlement (prisoner transport) versus an opportunistic settlement (rich resources) is going to influence a lot of the behavioral patterns of the people.
