Looking at it in slomo, seems like they just squirted some liquid at it to scare it. From IMDB:
Many believe they actually shot rats (with something like pellet guns) for this movie. But if you look frame by frame, it is clear what is actually done is that they shot a high intensity squirt of fake blood, stunning the rat.
I looked it up! They shot them with paintballs 💀
And that’s why ASPCA gets involved in Hollywood movies now, oof. I can’t find anything official, but searching for “food of the gods animal cruelty” gets search results about maybe they dismembered and/or drowned rats as well 😬
