Does anyone think it would be a good idea to have a rule to prevent race spoilers on this community till 24hrs after a race?

Given the nature of races being in a different part of the world every time, time zones vary greatly and it’s not always possible to watch a race “live”.

Personality I would like to stay subbed to this community, so I can get f1 news and posts when I browse Lemmy. But if it isn’t possible to make a rule like that and I’m likely to get a spoiler I would have to either stop using Lemmy for 24hrs (oh the horror) or unsub from this community.

Just a thought.

I think this kind of rule would be a bad idea and result in this rare niche community that is actually active to die.

I’ve always felt these kinds of requests and rules are weird because it’s to make up for someone’s lack of self control to not watch social media. If your schedule or timezone is as such you can’t watch it live, it would be weird that you can waste time on social media before you have time to watch the race or a summary.

You really need to put in effort to get spoiled by results here. You’re not getting notifications from here like with news app.

I agree with the premise of not going on social media when you haven’t seen the race yet and don’t want to be spoiled.

But, there is a big difference between finding time for three minutes of social media scrolling and watching 90 minutes of cars zooming around.

You can easily get spoiled for scrolling past a post on here that got into your feed.

But yeah, i still agree with the main stance. Don’t go on social media if you don’t want to be spoiled what the results are going to be. It’s really in your own hands.

It would be good if Lemmy had a “snooze community” feature where you could not see posts in any feeds for a specified amount of time. So basically on a race weekend you could snooze the community for 3 days or whatever and no posts would appear in your feed.

Edit: raised it as a feature enhancement on Lemmy’s Githhub page, but was closed as the devs don’t have enough time, which is fair enough.

No; if we have a delay on discussion, I think fewer people will come back a full day later to post.

If you’re not seeing the race live, and want to avoid spoilers, don’t open an app that contains an F1 feed. Whenever I miss a race, I avoid spoilers until I can find time to watch.

If we had spoiler tags it would would have been helpful. But unfortunately, like others said, if we start banning posts and users for spoilers, this small community will die.

Yeah I’ve already had race results spoiled by posts on here but idk how much it would help me sadly, BBC news keeps spoiling the results for me as soon as I wake up

I try to minimize spoilers with a “generic” race and post-race discussion topic, but i agree with @DV8@lemmy.world. If i can’t see a race live i just don’t touch my phone.

Given there is another f1 community, I subbed to this one as it isn’t full of karma removed who spoil race results for upvotes. They add literally nothing to the discussion, and are adamant in their ability to be able to do so. I think this community should be different

I think it would be counterintuitive to cater to a small percentage of people who 1) didn’t see it live and 2) are bothered by knowing the results early.

I think it would be more beneficial for users to take matters into their own hands.

For example, you can create another account and block the Formula 1 and Formuladank communities so you can browse without the risk of getting spoiled by a post going by your feed.

Then when you’ve seen it, switch back to your main.

Would your proposal only mean no posts that display race results in title or image within the first 24 hrs, or go further than that?

And does it need to be 24 hours? That’s a long time. What is the longest period between ending time of a race and a normal waking up and watching a re-live look like? Here in Europe, I think with the Asian races it’s like 5 hours tops.

I think the longest time would probably be around 12 hours (24 was just me being conservative about it)

Thinking of a race that actually happens on Saturday and you can only watch it on Sunday.

Also I think you’re on to something there, if we say: hey just on Sundays, don’t post spoilers in the title and if you’re posting a spoiler image mark it nsfw so it gets blurred out.

But why are you looking at an F1 community if you don’t want to know anything about the race that happened up to half a day ago? I don’t watch every race live but I just don’t look at Lemmy or other sports news. Works perfectly well and nobody needs to tip toe around my lack of self control.

I think titles/thumbnails only is a good compromise. We really don’t want to kill discussion, but I have spoiled myself before by forgetting not to open Lemmy on a day where I was going to watch the replay and then immediately seeing “X wins Grand Prix” as a post title. Maybe it’s as simple as titling something like “Race winner discussion” instead?

Nah, let people discuss it. If you don’t want to ruin the race result then don’t open the app that tells you race results.

This app has more than just F1. I’d rather block this community than have a single race spoiled.

After all, I get nothing useful from this community.
