Too many wardrobe malfunctions involving protruding tree stems.
The time has come for us to return to the toga. It is surely to clothing what crabs are to evolution.
Celtic culture was in vogue though almost all of Europe in the first 300yrs AD. That’s probably a huge influence on that shift.
Germany, Central Asian nomadic tribes, and Persia were more influential on this particular change in style.
Fun fact though - chainmail is Celtic in origin, and sometimes referred to by the Romans as Lorica Gallica - ‘Gallic armor’.
