Celtic culture was in vogue though almost all of Europe in the first 300yrs AD. That’s probably a huge influence on that shift.
Germany, Central Asian nomadic tribes, and Persia were more influential on this particular change in style.
Fun fact though - chainmail is Celtic in origin, and sometimes referred to by the Romans as Lorica Gallica - ‘Gallic armor’.
