I’m not sure what’s going on over there, but half the time I see a post from there or go into a comment section and it’s just…bad. Like old reddit the_donald bad. Constant trolling, etc. You TS just really bad vibes. I’ve been blocking the communities as they come up, but I’m not sure what else I can do.

I’ve had some interesting and insightful conversations with people from Hexbear for the last few days. However, we did reach a point where people from Hexbear started defending the Taliban and North Korea. There are tankies on Hexbear. Probably a lot of them. It’s something people should know.

If you had engaged in good faith instead of being rude and combative (not to mention demonstrating extremely weak dunking game), you might have learned a thing or two about some egregious lies you’ve been told about a country that has been in a constant state of war with an impossibly powerful empire sitting almost literally at its doorstep for several decades now. Alas, instead you chose to be a jerk.

But yeah, it’s us Hexbear tankies who are the unpleasant ones. Totally.

Hello! I am interested in information about these lies. Please direct me in the right direction to learn more.

I’ll start with one piece of information that would have to be challenged for me to support the DPRK. I understand that North Korea operates under a totalitarian dictatorship run by a defacto dynasty. If this isn’t true, point me to where I can learn more.

Editing to add that I want to be clear that I am attempting to argue in good faith. I gave an example only as an easy starting point. If you think it is unfairly phrased, please correct me. I hope you understand that this take is so unfamiliar to me that I feel an urge to learn more.

I unfortunately need to go to bed now, and in all honesty this is not a topic I’m personally very knowledgeable about, but here is an extensive thread with links to many resources on the subject. Hopefully other users will be able to provide you with a more succinct and direct response fairly soon.

Hello! Here is a Google drive with all of Season 3 of a podcast called Blowback, a history podcast. This particular season has to do with the history of Korea, the Korean war, the formation of North and South Korea, and is a very entertaining listen.

              https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1WSE-G3x7QBc9ZFmh20AFGn5Nq7oBsJYN

Thank you for being curious!! The other two seasons of Blowback are certified bangers as well, those being about Iraq and Cuba. Enjoy!

Others have already given very good responses, but I’d also like to point out all the ridiculous articles Western media has done on North Korea, such as ”The state told everyone Kim Jong-il scored 18 hole-in-ones the first time he played golf!”, ”Everyone in North Korea has to get Kim Jong-un’s haircut! Or maybe nobody’s allowed to or they’ll be jailed, idk?”, or people supposedly being executed for frivolous reasons.

These are usually being based on nothing but lies from ”anonymous sources” (or sometimes just nothing at all), often attributed to Radio Free Asia, a CIA propaganda front. Frankly, the way the DPRK is portrayed in Western media is also racist, being depicted as basically a bunch of simpletons who hivemindedly worship their Great Leader or war hungry psychopaths (pretty rich coming from the US).

Other users have linked to good resources, but one thing I’d like to comment on is that people should be wary of overusing thought-terminating epithets. Communists also have this problem to some extent when they flippantly throw out the “fascist” label, but coming into the wider fediverse after the redditpocalypse, I’ve seen too many “discussions” that are essentially “authoritarian totalitarian fascist genocidal dictatorship upvotes to the left pls” which is an extremely reddit type of discourse that serves to shut down discussion before it even begins (they’re bad bad bad bad nothing to talk about).

I’m not accusing you of this because you’ve made a good faith effort to seek out constructive engagement. In most other cases though, I wish more people would investigate these claims like how you’re doing instead of salad tossing adjectives and relying purely on intuition and cultural conditioning.

Based on the admin’s outrage, we’re probably going to get removedd by the end of the day. You can make a thread on c/askchapo on our instance to get plenty of information on these topic.

I have my own thoughts but I just woke up and people are already so mad about hexbear users posting on a discussion at the front of active that I’m hesitant to put a wall of text here.

I assume they were talking about this interaction:

The US fled Afghanistan and the Taliban won. Mind you, while I don’t like the Taliban, it’s better for them to be in charge than the colonial occupier the US had been trying to act as for 20 fucking years. If there is to be hope for Afghanistan in the dilemma between the Taliban and US, we must agree that the local force that actually has some stake in the country doing well is the better option.

Hardly a defence of the Taliban’s ideology or methods. As for the stuff about DPRK, well… libs gonna lib.

However, we did reach a point where people from Hexbear started defending the Taliban and North Korea.

I think that was just me and what I was saying – which you are wildly misrepresenting – is that I’d rather the Taliban be in charge of Afghanistan than the US, because with a local government rather than a colonial government there is a much better outlook for positive change due to local sentiments (and protest, etc.)

As I told you then and will repeat: I do not like the Taliban. This isn’t about “liking” anyone, it’s about the US colonial occupation not being a model for anyone in the country making progress except for a small handful of compradores.

The problem is you like the Taliban oppressing the people of Afghanistan more than them having a representative democracy where they govern themselves. The Taliban denies woman basic human rights like access to education. It cuts the heads off of political enemies. It’s performs cruel and unusual punishments on prisoners. It imposes its version of Islam on everyone. This is not desirable. The idea you would blow this off with nonsense about colonialism is absurd. Local rule is not somehow inherently desirable. Going out of your way to rationalize authoritarianism is tanky behavior.

It’s hard to image a more controversial statement. America was never going to be able to stay forever, nor did most Americans want to be involved, but the outcome Afghanistan got was hardly the preferable one.
