Went to the gemstone and lapidary club show and it was very interesting. Lots of stuff that I just wanted to touch because it was so polished and smooth. Lots of beautiful fossils and a gem faceting demonstration. It’s a 2 day thing so I’m going back tomorrow because I’ve got a guy holding a lapis pendant for me (oops 😬💸) and there was a piece of petrified wood that I really liked because it looked nice to hold in my hand and I hope it’s still there. I bought an orthoceras pendant as well. I’d like something amber as well. Dammit there were so many things I wanted! I loved the opals and malachite as well.

most gemstones are heated to intensify colour, 🤷‍♀️ they are still beautiful

the bad amber is ground up into a dust then compressed, synthetic resin may also be added ,

check using a black light, real amber glows a strange milky green, it’s not real

the big problem is selling them at a higher price as if they are completely natural, heated are not

It’s quite a small event in the local (to me) church hall, but I can look at that sort of thing for ages, and the Minipeelers share my love of fossils and minerals. I’d love to take them to that fossil place out in the eastern side of town, I’ve heard it’s huge! (Edit: I may be thinking of Chrystal World in Devon Meadows?)

and you can stop off at Fossil Beach Mt Martha too 😀 The fossils are just there to pick up in plain sight, great for the Minis

once it’s spring I’m off to the quarry in geelong to dig the fyansford formation

    Today’s mental therapy: Moving mulch.

Yesterday the resident magpie was having a fight w/ her (I presume) partner. Was pretty viscous, I’ve never seen that before. Today they’re just wondering around together eating stuff from the lawn like nothing happened. Makes you wonder the sorts of things they fight about. Wasn’t territory (they’ve been there together for years).

Arrived in WA and seemingly brought shitty weather with me but because of the rain, it’s quite warm! I dusted off my Switch after goodness knows how long and played The Gardens Between for most of the flight. Really cute local game though a bit overdone on the 80s nostalgia/Japan theming with the cutscenes… still very beautifully designed, ingenious puzzles - nothing too hard but they scratch your brain in just the right way that makes you feel like an ingenious kid again. So in that regard, top marks for really giving puzzles a feeling and a narrative.

Well, time to get myself out of this shed of a terminal and enjoy a nice meal and a good night’s sleep. 😴

I love a bacon cheeseburger. Who doesn’t ? but the amount of boring prep followed by REALLY fast cooking sends me into a psychotic frenzy. It almost never seems worth it. Almost…

I cook the bacon first then foil it. That way I can concentrate on the patty and the chips. I refuse to have a cold burger in my own home.

That’s what I’m saying. At my compound, the burgers are straight off the grill and onto your bun. Super hot and fresh with all the toppings you like. But to get to that point where everything lines up is a fucking chore and barely worth it.

People don’t realise what it takes to make a viciously great burger. Type of meat, fat content, type of bun, perfect crispy bacon, lettuce and tomato has to be crisp and cold, various toppings, sauces, chips, all the rest… it’s no laughing matter haha.

I’m way too invested in this shit.

There’s a food & wine “festival” happening next door to the hotel. We thought about checking it out until we realised we were paying $30ea before trying anything - didnt look like a tasting event but a BUY A COCKTAIL event. Now I’m just enjoying a solo dance party on the balcony while watching people basically need to be carried out…

Should add that I’m fully prepared to called emergency services for anyone who looks like they’ve been abandoned by their friends. Until then, I will dance to this god awful DJ

Familycalhoon are getting a new microwave for the first time in about 20 years. I think they used to have just the one kind…

Also, first Parkrun in about 5 weeks… Good to be back at it, but why did I pick one that had a hill on the way out and on the way back…
