    From the department of duh?

My employer has over 100k employees, and our insurance is pretty typical for a big US company. I hit my out of pocket maximum ($7500) two years in a row after my wife’s cancer diagnosis. I am certain that I am in the minority in being able to afford an unexpected $15,000 expense. It sucked for me and changed a bunch of plans. Many people would probably find themselves servicing an additional difficult debt at one of the most difficult moments of their life.

If you don’t have insurance, I don’t know what you would do. The total bills were hundreds of thousands of dollars.
