  • It varies a lot from person to person among those who are bilingual, and even from era to era. I’m Honduran, for context. I had nearly natively fluent English when I came out of high school and began working at a call center, mostly because I played an MMO for years and spent days and nights in Skype calls with groups of people from all over the world, most of which were native English speakers. Everyone else on the call center was astounded at how good my English was, and it was indeed miles better than anyone else in the office.

Then, I started university, it was predominantly taught in Spanish, everyone spoke Spanish, and I stopped playing MMOs and spending all day on Skype calls. I very clearly remember the transition, where I had trouble speaking Spanish quickly because I was so used to English, to now having to think for a second what I want to say in English before saying it in a less than perfect accent, while my Spanish now flows quite easily. My Spanish and my English essentially swapped places (to where they should’ve always been, if you ask me). I now believe this had a noticeable impact on my social life when I was young, I was too shy to talk in Spanish but the shyness would fade away completely if I held the conversation in English. Thankfully, spanglish became a predominant way of speaking now and everyone is happy lmao.

Content consumed did little difference, I believe. I never stopped consuming content in English. Still do, I spend too much time on Youtube and 99% of what I watch is in English, but my English will never be as good as it was back in those MMO days. Daily practice with native speakers makes all the difference in the world. I now have friends with better English than I had in my golden years, but since they work for Brits or Aussies, they have that accent, and I can’t tell the latino bits out of them at all, they could fool me if I didn’t know any better.

Edit: education here is not good. I had classmates on senior year who couldn’t read out of a reading book, at ALL. I’ve heard similar stories from even the most prestigious schools in the city. My school would pride itself on having some american teachers at some point, but that was history by the time I rolled through, so my English was 100% a gamer skill.

  • My steam wrapped for 2023 is fully windows, 2024 has about 40% windows 60% Linux, purely from the moment I switched halfway through the year, and 2025 is fully Linux.

    I regret nothing.

    Caveats:

    • I built a new computer in early 2025, knew I’d be making Linux, went AMD 7900xtx. Worked right out the box flawlessly.
    • I started out self hosting stuff and got somewhat comfortable with Linux in those instances, so when I eventually threw endeavouros into my laptop, it all just worked for me. I had a couple of “laptop won’t boot because its battery died mid update” events, which is about a couple more than there ever should’ve been, but it wasn’t too hard to recover the laptop every time, with help from chatgpt
    • switched to Bazzite for my new desktop and work framework 13 laptop, but hold endeavouros in my heart with great affection, because it is awesome and Linux is awesome no matter what flavour you pick (restrictions apply, research what you’re getting into when picking a distro, and compare a bit but don’t overstress)
    • Linux may or may not radicalize you heavily. The liberating feeling sometimes might make you mad that you put up with all that Apple/Microsoft/Adobe bullshit for all those years. Self-hosting intensifies radicalization. Don’t come blaming me when you find yourself in a shadow war with the Mossad over your email server getting shadowbanned throughout the Chilean Patagonia due to attempting to create an ex-engineers’ farming commune and a regional meshcore network there.

  • I’m getting quite strained from the sentiment I’m gathering from people who possess a level of cynicism to where, they believe all Americans deserve what’s happening and been happening. I don’t agree with that.

Listen bro, at least you had a chance to vote. We had our drug lord ex-president pardoned by Trump just because he’s right wing, and probably with the help of a bribe. Trump straight up said who should win in our elections like 2 days before our elections, and threatened the country if the wrong party won. Guess what happened. GUESS.

Forgive me for not really giving a fuck about the poor good guys that didn’t vote Trump, when he never should’ve made it back into the ballot in the first place. The american system just failed the whole world. AGAIN. Few people will have a positive sentiment of the US right now with all the shit that’s hitting the fan, all because you fuckers couldn’t prosecute or get rid of the most transparently criminal US president in history.

For what it’s worth, y’all share my hatred with the ABSOLUTE FUCKING removed around here who were all “kamala is worse because Gaza, vote trump” even though they claimed to be left wing. If a leftist seriously typed that shit back then all over Lemmy, y’all need a fucking lobotomy, you damn removed.

  • For those who will just skim the title: the part of the salary being cut was never meant to be a permanent part of the salary package, and was meant to help pay for relocation to Bogotá as part of the transition into being a member of Congress. The salary has now dropped from ~14k USD/month to just shy of 10k USD/month, and the Colombian Congress isn’t happy about it. I know well paid latin-American software developers working 2 jobs who still don’t make that much a month, by comparison.

  • They just did a video through FUTO where they go over all “missing” features and why they haven’t or aren’t implementing them. Almost from the start they essentially said that if it’s still missing by now, there’s a reason why, and they mostly have everything they wanted to build into immich already on immich. I would imagine a feature complete project would be in more of a maintenance phase, and maintenance being slow during the holidays sounds… Pretty normal to me.

  • The two party system is all too common in way too many countries; a good chunk of us has probably spent most of our lives, and will probably spend the rest of them, seeing stupid people being elected because the alternative is another clown from the other team. What nobody else has is the firepower of the next 20 nations combined. To the surprise of absolutely fucking nobody, too much power can turn you into a bully. The US military complex needs to be dismantled by the rest of the imperial core or the imperial core won’t last much longer, and let’s not even get started with the UN.

Come on dude, that’s copium. Would it have eventually happened? Sure, the MAGA movement is the new mainstream right wing and this could’ve become a common sentiment through think tank pushes. Would it have happened right now under Kamala? Lmfao fuck no, that’s ridiculous

If you were really saying both sides would’ve been just as bad, just take the L and move on. Kamala wouldn’t have pardoned my country’s drug lord ex-president, among hundreds of other things, and that’s facts.

  • Listen, man, I’m from Honduras. Cuba and Venezuela get touted as the literal demonic results of communism over here, as if communists declared war on the Cuban and Venezuelan peoples. Communism was never going to get rid of corruption because corruption is part of any system of power. Communism guards against specific flaws in capitalism, but it’s still not a perfect system. This doesn’t clear the governments of either country of their sins, but we HAVE to weigh that against the actions of the literal colossus that decides whether any and every country in the Americas is prosperous or carpet bombed/cut off from the rest of the world, and they decide that purely on what interests and benefits them. Socialist and communist policies are both the only way forward for the continent, and literally impossible to pull off while the US controls all of us. The alternative is to just become slaves with ever lower wages, ever higher costs of living, and a bunch of bootlicking politicians telling you not to listen through your ears or see through your eyes, but to listen to them and to the empire because they know better, all the while also being told “at least you’re not as bad off as those stinking communists, and you need to fight to prevent that from happening to you”, as if the problem wasn’t the United fucking States assfucking anyone who dares to try and make things better.

By all means, hate and rage against the corrupt, but also do try to understand who the real culprits of this clusterfuck are.

  • the original or more prevalent tool needs to seek ways to be better as to not lose market share

I think concentration of market share itself is an issue. I just got banned from WhatsApp, twice in a row, by the automated spam banhammer they have, and I fully expect to get banned a third time as soon as their registration retry timeout expires in like 18 fucking hours (I’ve been at this since Friday).

I hate Meta as much as anyone else around here, but I’ve essentially been cut off from my entire community with this single event (which, to clarify, is a completely unwarranted ban that has been reverted by WhatsApp twice now). Everyone uses WhatsApp for their hustles, businesses, friend groups, neighborhood groups, etc. I have tried for YEARS to get a movement going to at least consider installing alternatives. I’m now left with signal which has 1 contact, and telegram which a ton of people downloaded during a whatsapp outage during the pandemic, but which nobody uses anymore because… WhatsApp came back rather quickly.

The lack of interop and lack of any usage of email on WhatsApp for anything other than support tickets, means I might need to ditch my phone number, which I’ve had for 20 years, because Meta’s AI got trigger happy with me for some obscure reason that not even they seem to understand.

Something that truly pisses me off about this specific conversation is, people in the privacy circles can’t quite seem to grasp just how much of a stranglehold Meta has on its communities. There’s 0 chance of me being able to get even a fraction of the people I interact with to use something other than WhatsApp. I’ve tried multiple times through the years and I have never been able to do anything about it, and it quite frankly pisses me off that the general response to someone using WhatsApp around here is “just stop using it and get your friends to stop too lol wtf why you such a lil removed” as if we don’t live in a society that depends on these fucking monopolies because that’s how they were designed. You quite literally can’t opt for alternatives or go against the flow on this because it can result in you being cut off from your entire community, and as much as anyone here likes to LARP that they’re post-apocalyptic survivors who can and do live by themselves or whatever, that’s not the world we live in.

Some stuff needs to become interoperable, their concentrated market share usage needs to directly correlate to how much regulatory oversight they receive, and ideally it should either be diversified or government-owned if the concentration is too high and can’t be reversed. All of this can only happen through legislation, and clearly legislation isn’t doing shit because the EU’s DMA should have me connecting into the WhatsApp network from other apps already.

  • This is serious and everyone is just joking about how bad it is.

As a Honduran watching all of this unfolding, seeing it directly affecting my country out of nowhere as if by some unimaginable cosmic joke, what the fuck else do we do? Rise against the empire and become a tale of failed ideologies for future generations?

The US had a fucking DECADE to do something about all this, and they didn’t. That’s a willful decision, and not one that anyone on earth can do something about, due to certain mutual assurances that the US made sure to have in place long before most of us were even born.

So uh yeah… I’ll just keep joking about it until you fucks bomb us all to death for national security or some shit.

  • Why would Putin want one of his biggest sources of oil gone? Please, the “he works for Putin” rhetoric might have been true or at least made sense during his first administration, but now? No, this is a full GOP imperialist move, with a touch of Trumpist megalomania. It’s what the right-wing-led US has historically done for the better part of the last century. Tons of very powerful people in very powerful places will be getting a ton more money out of this, and Putin isn’t one of them.

  • I think xhamster or one of those pages, they have AI subtitles I believe. They automatically pick up the language and give you English subtitles by default.

Edit: to clarify, I don’t usually pay attention to the dialogue unless its unscripted amateur stuff. Two porn actors reading the corniest lines possible? Fuck no. A random-ass couple being perverted and uploading themselves online cause they’re pervs, and you can hear their perv talks? Fuck yes, sign me the fuck up, let’s all be pervs together, the way Lenin intended.
