  • Personally, I think this is good. Obviously most people here already use some libre alternative or just access this via the web or dual boot, but most non-computer savvy people are dead set with keeping to what they already use either because of work or simply being more comfortable sticking with what they know.

Plus, there’s probably cases where the web versions aren’t going to be viable. Kind of ironic that so many linux people simultaneously make fun of the ChromeOS workflow where everything depends on browser-based services while dismissing people who can’t switch fully because needing the MS suite with “just use the browser version”.

  • The people attempting to make excuses for this or who try and question the motives of the original author are revealing themselves either to be zionist or gullible enough to have fallen for the zionist counter-insurgency against the anti-Israel movement. Personally, if a poll came out on the worldwide opinion of white people on white nationalism and showed an overwhelming support for these things across multiple countries, no one here would be making these kinds of arguments. If 92% of white Canadians were revealed to be neo-nazis, very few non-neo-nazis would shy away from saying something about it. If 87% of white South Africans were found to claim that apartheid isn’t racist and 85% identified themselves as white nationalists, no one here would be trying to defend that or be playing PR defence for them. It’s a double standard that exists only as a PR cudgel for the Zionist project. We don’t need to centre the voice of the oppressor, we must however centre the voice of the very people they are trying to exterminate, which is the overwhelmingly non-Jewish Palestinian population.

  • Revolution is the overthrow of one class by another. What occurred in France, Russia, and a number of anti-colonial national liberation struggles throughout the global south for instance. The OP is of course being facetious (can’t blame them, Americans are frustrating in their servitude and passivity despite what’s unfolding), revolution doesn’t occur unless the material conditions are conducive to mass disobedience on that scale. The problem is that liberals are trying to funnel the disillusionment and contain it in hopes of dissipating the revolutionary moment in order to get back to their usual business of putting a human face on America’s domination and hostility in South America, Asia, and Africa as the “Good Cop” to the Republican’s “Bad Cop”.

  • Maybe depends on which server implementation you use, I could be out of date. I heard about Synapse, the “flagship” implementation, being heavier though you of course have the option to use one of the lighter weight implementations. Personally, I don’t self host and I am mostly going on second-hand information that I’ve read from people who do self host.

  • Both are options that I’m personally not too fond of, but can nonetheless respect that these probably fit the threat model of some people. Signal is not self hostable, not all that private (still better than whatsapp atleast), and it’s servers are located in the States. Does have some FOSS clients like molly atleast.

Matrix is a bit more complicated in my opinion. While the protocol itself is fine, the history behind it is what makes me not want to use it personally. Namely, it being a project that emerged from Amdocs, an Israeli telecommunications company previously suspected of eavesdropping and spying on people. While open-source and self-hostable, it has a network effect going on where everyone registers on the main instance and self-hosting is apparently incredibly resource intensive. Plus, most instances require you to give an email address.

Personally, I’d recommend looking into GNU Jami and XMPP. XMPP may not have encryption as a built-in component of the protocol in the way that it is with Matrix, it nonetheless exists as an option and there’s plenty of no-email-required instances. XMPP is also less resource intensive to self host should you wish to do that.

Jami doesn’t work with servers but is instead distributed and peer-to-peer along with being libre software. Only knock against this one is that the desktop client is based on electron, which isn’t a problem for me personally but there are people who’re nonetheless opinionated about that.

  • I’d advise using an email aliasing service (i.e addy.io) and a locally available password database (i.e keepass) synced across your devices via syncthing to protect your actual email address from leaks and to keep your passwords out of the cloud respectively.

Other than that, limit your number of online accounts to reduce number of potential weak links. Use cash to pay for stuff when possible. If you absolutely need to consume mainstream social media, do so via libre frontends like Redlib for reddit and invidous for youtube. Basically, give up any semblance of convenience.

  • now we can go back & look at all the from groups the WWP created & trace them to the present day. Lot of it comes from the HUAC lashing out at exposing their own informants lol

Not too big on the PSL myself, I’m nonetheless curious. Does this mean you’re saying they’re a plant organisation that exists to funnel revolutionary momentum back into supporting the status quo? I wouldn’t put it past the states, I’d nonetheless ask for any sources on this statement.

  • Permanent Revolution mostly, I think it’s what informs their strong internationalism bent. This is of course in the best case scenarios.

In practice, there are plenty of self-proclaimed Trotskyist groups who haven’t touched a word of theory and platform views Trotsky would’ve definitely disagreed with. For exmple, the man himself understood the utility of supporting anti-imperialist forces even if those forces were not socialist or even right wing, as seen by his views on KMT. Today, there are Trotskyist groups who uphold imperialist friendly views on Venezuala, Russia, Iran, Palestine, and even China and Cuba.

In totality, Trotskyists can certainly be genuine communists that contribute positively to the movement. But in the majority of cases, I’d encourage healthy skepiticism toward such groups. Imperialism is the litmus test here as always, and they will fail it more often than not.

  • Personally, I don’t think it has had much of an impact. Plenty of people got their info from social media before short form content and held reactionary viewpoints. Certainly true that these people aren’t willing to hear pushback, but this also isn’t anything new. There were plenty of men denying the existence of patriarcy, whites denying the existence of white privilege, and liberals running defence for the bourgeoisie before tiktok and being completely unwilling to deal with even mild pushback in good faith.

Personally, I believe all this can be explained as the result of these people following the logical conclusion of their own sef interest. Obviously whites deny white privilege because they are beneficiaries of the oppresion they have meted out, for example. Social media did not create misogyny, “colour-blindism”, or liberalism. These things are products of living in a society where capital is the eternal dictator and has a vested interest in maintaining reactionary and idealist dominance. The internet is just the primary machine through which incorrect ideology is disseminated, but lets not pretend this is unprecedented given that this was preseded by a century or more of bourgeois-owned tv, radio, and newspapers.

  • Marxism as far as I view it, is not about the morality of owning property or earning passive income, it is simply the scientific and material study of the underlying class dynamics at work within the political economy of society.

Secondly, I personally do not view someone being a shareholder or passive income earner as being morally bad necessarily. There are certainly some nasty and exploitative class dynamics that are happening beneath the surface, but someone choosing to not participate in it won’t make a difference given that this is about the system and not just individual choice. I will not judge those who do it when the other option is living in poverty or sub-optimal conditions, unless it involves helping the armed forces of imperialist countries or weapons manufacturers who supply said forces with armaments.

Thirdly, I do not have much advice to offer other than do what you must to survive. If welfare, charity, share-holding, or whatever helps you do that, then do it. Though I would nonetheless caution you to be smart and risk averse, which is of course not a combination often associated with being a shareholder.
