I didn’t read the article, but to back up what the headline says I have seen the price of batteries dramatically decrease over the last few years. For example, about 3 years ago I got some 200Ah lead gel-type batteries for my solar setup that cost over $400 each, and one of them is already failing. Last year and this year I bought LiFePO4 batteries that are higher capacity for less than the lead ones cost. The first batch was near $400 each for 300Ah LiFePO4 batteries, and this year I got more of the same for about $250 each. Lead is dead for solar. LiFePO4 is very cheap relatively now. The next step is probably Sodium-ion batteries - should be cheaper and more reliable than LiFePO4 batteries.

GrapheneOS is the best option that I know of for a phone ROM. LineageOS for MicroG is a decent alternative for de-googled ROMs, and it supports a wider range of devices. It’s not the official LineageOS, but is maintained on a separate site that hosts builds that include MicroG. Official LineageOS does not support MicroG but can be installed without Google crap (and will not work with things that require google play services)

I use zero banking apps or payment apps on my phone, because financial stuff is too important to be stored in a pocket-sized device that can be lost or stolen. I have no problem accomplishing payments online or in person, using cards or cash.

Generally people commute to jobs within a reasonable distance, from where they live if they can’t find a nearby job that’s good enough.

In a semi-rural area like that, it’s only going to take you about 30 minutes to drive 30 miles on highways. It’s not like driving through 30 miles of city. It’s common for rural folks to have a 30 minute to 1 hour daily commute to work.

Yep, it’s great to have room to breathe and do what you want, and still have a reasonable access to basic stuff nearby like groceries, general supplies. In the old days, living outside the city meant that it was hard to get anything that’s not common, boring, or basic. You’d have to drive to a Big City to get any kind of unusual stuff like skateboards or guitars. But we have online shopping now and you can get anything you want shipped to your doorstep, so I have no need for the city.
