Advertising doesn’t seem like a large enough lever to drive something this globally coordinated.
My read is that governments and large institutions are preparing for the kind of systemic instability climate change is going to produce.
Across the world we’re already seeing laws and policies that quietly restrict the ability to organise, protest, or remain anonymous online, while surveillance capabilities expand at the same time. None of this is particularly popular, yet it keeps happening.
Why?
Because the next few decades are likely to involve continuous pressure from climate-driven problems: migration, water shortages, falling crop yields, energy instability, and the political conflict that follows when resources get tighter.
From that perspective, universal ID verification online isn’t mainly about ads or “protecting the kids”. It’s about mapping who is who, who talks to who, and how information spreads.
If you expect future mass unrest, protest movements, or large-scale political instability, that kind of data becomes extremely valuable.
And historically, elites often choose to invest more effort in managing the consequences of systemic problems than in solving the underlying causes.
So instead of “AI spam broke advertising”, the bigger story might be that institutions are building the infrastructure to monitor and manage populations during a much messier future.
their rules don’t stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground runnin’

Ooof, that is a solid heads up, thank you!
I have bought some things from UMart out of convenience but always prefer to support my local independent PC stores. I guess this just reeenforces why the latter is so important!

Not to mention the diminished teams who are now under resourced to handle their existing workloads. I’m sure they will do great as things spiral because the sloppy work of the AI has increased their workload, not reduced it. As the cracks begin to form on the human side of things, nothing could possibly go wrong. After all, the human element of any system is often the most secure. /s

Correct. Plus it may not be as resilient as we think. Just because they’re billion dollar companies doesn’t mean they don’t follow the tradition of building systems with duct tape and a prayer.
I’m intrigued to hear you mention magic. My current slogan is “Tech. Magic. Action.”, which I believe are the three pillars needed.
I’m a software engineer and technical director of my own media studio. I have recently been trying to nudge my career into that next level where I combine creativity with technology and just tell people what I do is magic, so I don’t have to go too deep into the inner workings of things. I can explain the how, but honestly over the years I’ve learned people don’t want to know how things work, or why we do them, they just want to reap the benefits.
In Jodorowsky’s Technopriests, the protagonist seeks to guide his people to a place where they can establish a new society. One where harmonious human relationships are valued more than technological prowess corrupted by an excess of total science and a total lack of consciousness.
I wonder how we can replicate such a journey in real life. Because it’s desperately needed.
I agree with this, but it’s more than just getting along that the left is failing at. We need to organise better, fight more effectively and build strong communities. This is something the religious folks have mastered.
The boomers will almost all be dead. I assume.
It gets better when you get used to this problem and something far worse comes along, making you wish you just had the original problem.

Except for Dogman, who was bitten by a radioactive dog during a school trip. Now he can use scent to track his enemies and hear a bad guy whisper across a building.

From a mental health POV, having dogs has definitely helped me maintain routine, reduce emotional escalation and kept me aware of how I am accountable to keep them going too.
Sometimes you can get so stuck in your ways, thinking in the moment you need to panic to survive. It takes a cute animal reacting to that to make you realise there’s other ways to be.
tl;dr - Dogs teach us to be better people.

Yep, which from a system setup point of view makes a lot of sense. I’m glad law makers are thinking about computer system design even if the laws aren’t perfect out the gate. At least in this instance it isn’t some covert data collection exercise!
To be honest I haven’t read the law in detail, but I doubt they’ve thought about things like automation, share accounts and other sysops concerns but it’s better than the past 30 years where lawmakers treat digital and the internet like some mystical black box that’ll sort itself out.
A bunch of nerds who only cared about perfection.
That way the idea can’t be corrupted cause a nerd’s obsession is more powerful than anything.

It’s insane to think anyone would travel to the US as a tourist, or for work.

“Age verification” is a big umbrella. Claiming that merely checking an entered birth date is the equivalent of uploading an ID is disingenuous and just fishing for clicks.
Yes, there are tangible connections to other concerning privacy violations in this space… but come on. Steam asks you for your birth date before you watch an R18+ game trailer. I’ve been lying on that form for over twenty years, since before I was 18.
Getting upset over this feels like the beginning of getting your panties twisted over everything. “Oh no, someone pressed a button on a keyboard, that’s how nukes are fired!”
This feels like a non issue.

Cries upside down (Australian)
I became so good at masking because of coming from a environment where my needs weren’t met and my true self wasn’t safe to exist. I was often more concerned about making sure my parents didn’t pop off that I developed an unhealthy way of looking at the world where I put the needs of others above myself - to the point of complete self destruction in front of people who cared about me.
Over the years I finally realised what was going on, but it took being with another person who also has autism and C-PTSD to observe the behaviours in one another and finally take control. In some ways it is a little tragic we both went through so much hardship while having our basic needs ignored from a young age, but in another way I’m so grateful for the miracle of having found a person who perfectly fits my broken parts so we can guide each other through it with understanding and experience.
I regret the times I’ve treated others unfairly because of the pressures of life and not having the resources or wisdom to do things properly. I’m doing my best now to make amends for my past mistakes, heal myself and move into the future with healthy boundaries. I’ve been hurt in ways I can’t even begin to explain, I require a certain amount of medication just to function but I’m still here and I feel optimistic for the future. It’s going to be hard work to rebuild the things I’ve lost, but I’m motivated to do good for myself and for the new family I’m building.
Strict parents also love to promote intellectual pursuits while allowing none of the freedom that allows for intellect to develop. Literally torture.
