Hello queer friends, So a few days ago I left reddit and I started looking into the fediverse as an alternative but the more I read the more confused I got XD So I would like some help please. I did read the “The Queer Guide to Finding a Fediverse Server” which was helpful but I would like more information.
I have come to understand that mastodon, kbin, lemmy and others just work as front ends to the fediverse so it’s more personal preference?
I also found bookwyrm and since I have a goodreads account is it a good switch? And how would I go about connecting that to what ever front end I choose?
I have not decided what front end I will use, I know mastodon is the most used one but it’s UI feels to much like twitter and I detest twitters UI. I wish there as something like tumblr but Lemmy is the one that is closer to that right even if it’s modelled after reddit? Or I might just make it easy for myself and stay here I don’t know.
All I know is that I’m currently feeling like the gif of that blond dude with the handlebar moustache saying “WTF”… XD
Also ELI5 because I’m not techy and I have dyslexia. I will probably ask more questions in the comments…
They aren’t so much frontends. They are truly all individual applications, it just happens that their backend uses the same protocol. They don’t all use it the same way or even the same pieces of it.
If the implementation aligns close enough, they are able to talk to other applications using that protocol.
In mastodon you should be able to follow a Bookwyrm user’s update feed. To actually track books you’re likely going to need Bookwyrm still. Relating to Goodreads, I found the library in Bookwyrm was limited and I couldn’t figure out how to add new books, but I didn’t try for long. I already use Story Graph so wasn’t too motivated to try another platform.
In my experience it has been easiest to use multiple apps, but apps in the same category tend to work well together.

Welcome! A bit more on kbin and lemmy as reddit alternatives:
You can follow and post to Lemmy communities from kbin, upvote and downvote posts, and leave comments. The same the other way around. At least, you can when it’s working, sometimes bugs get in the way!
You can also follow and post to either from Mastodon, and make comments, but you can’t upvote or downvote from Mastodon.
In general Mastodon’s a more Twitter-like experience, Lemmy is Reddit-like, and KBin merges the two – it’s got a “microblog” tab as well as the link aggregation.
Update: If you don’t like Mastodon’s interface, there’s also CalcKey, which has a very different feel. I’ve got an account blahaj.zone, which is a very queer-friendly CalcKey instances, and there are others as well including calckey.lgbt.
Yoo CalcKey looks really good! How does CalcKey work? Is it like Mastodon? Can it connect to lemmy?
It is a microblogging platform like Mastodon, and is also compatible with Mastodon so people on both sides can communicate.
It can also read Lemmy, for example this thread is at https://blahaj.zone/notes/9gm1zf2t3e (it looks like it is not completely synchronized though).
The Lemmy experience is usable but imo not as much as using Lemmy directly or through an app.
So getting both would be the best option then?

From what I understand fediverse is a concept. There is no big server holding everybody’s data. Instead, people open their own server as a mean to defend everybody from company takeover. Mastadon is an alternative for twitter with this concept. Lemmy is alternative for reddit with this concept. I don’t use others yet so I can’t talk about other federated projects.

Fediverse is a network where servers send user posts to each other, in the effect every server should have the same or similar content. It’s not one app, it’s a protocol and you can make implementation yourself.
AFAIK Lemmy and Mastodon are connected with each other, but using them to read other one content is kind of buggy/hard. Kbin is easiest to operate if you want to see content of both.
Hmm I might just stay here then I think at-least until I understand it better haha.
You can have accounts on multiple instances. I do this for specialty instances such as mtgzone.com and startrek.website so i have a nice easy clean way to browse a particular fandom on its own, without other topics cluttering things up, the way i used multireddits on reddit.
