Pretty much every time I open Facebook, I am getting at least one post that is unironically advocating for biblical polygamy. Usually with shitty AI comics.

With how rapidly the U.S. is turning into the Handmaid’s Tale, it feels like this is a botted attempt to shift the Overton window into deeper christofascism.

More specific would be “historical polygamy from Biblical times.” Like, “kings and stuff did it back then.”

Anybody who thinks that means the Bible is for this need only look at the actual Biblical accounts of the many kings therein: Occasionally wise, fatally flawed, ultimately lonely and empty despite having the world of men in their hand.

It is not the role of man, to rule over other men (or women).

It’s polygamy for one gender only.

According to the Bible, King Solomon (the wise king) had 700 wives and 300 concubines.

His father, David (the one who killed Goliath), had 8 wives that are mentioned in the text.

So “Biblical marriage” could be monogamy (like Mary and Joseph) or a wide variety of polygamous options. Either way, the most important part is that women must be faithful to only one husband.

It’s weird, because it also thinks I’m Muslim. All of the reels are about how to know if I’m doing wudu right.

hasn’t islam had that kind of … “biblical polygamy” traditionally? i remember reading/hearing somewhere that men could have multiple wifes as long as they could pay for their resources. or is that just not contemporary anymore?

Yeah, traditionally a Muslim man can have up to four wives. Some Shias also have temporary marriages, where you marry a prostitute for as long as you want to enjoy their services.

It’s still a thing - Ibn Saud, first Saudi King, had so many wives that Wikipedia doesn’t list them all. The current king has only had up to three at once.

I’m not convinced it’s serious. That last sentence sounds like a joke.
