The thing is most of music discussion is “heres a song” but nobody really tries to listen unless its already a song they like. Thats fine its not a criticism but the overall discussion lacks a dive into what music is as not something to be consumed or background noise but such a strong medium for emotion.
I want something like a megathread for music every month where whoever partakes will share not only songs but albums or bands where we talk about what it means to us and why it should be considered for listening. Giving each other recommendations and engaging with each others choices and why it gives us resonance.
I grew up with my dad being a musician. Every car journey, every school holiday i would browse his huge selection of CDs. We’d write music together he’d remix my tracks id review his and we’d discover band after band after band together.
For me this was like half my personality just sharing even if we didnt have the same taste at the time id learn to appreciate his and him to mine it just hit different. Watching him rehearse and play live, giving feedback on what he had been writing.
Bring back music, bring back standing in a HMV using the disintegrating headphones to listen to random tracks.
Anyway yeah id like to see if me running a monthly or idk quarterly music comm megathread would be something the peeps would like.
What is even the point of people developing lemmy just to have 1 megathread for every comm? That negates entire functionality of lemmy.
A problem that I’ve seen with the music comm is that the sidebar indicates that all posts should link to songs. The movies comm sidebar indicates that movies and television should be discussed. The music sidebar says only post songs. It’s like whoever made the comm didn’t consider that there should be music news or other music-related discussion posted within the comm.
Most music nerds don’t even listen to individual songs. They listen to full albums. Listening to individual songs is for people who play pop radio promo singles.

Absolutely start a megathread on the music comm. With a weekly subject like genre or era. I think it’s worth a collective effort to try and make c music have both individual song/album posts as well as analysis/effort and recommendation requests.
I’m able to volunteer as mod for c music to help in running the ideas being proposed

I feel like you cant really listen a song recommended to you online. It becomes part of the category ‘internet’ not the category ‘music.’ I have to add it to a playlist, forget about it, and rediscover it a month later while on a walk to experience it as music.
We tried this with /c/art and it didn’t really take off. @Vostok_@hexbear.net did a lot of work maintaining it and they might have some tips.

I’ve been thinking about something like this too, mostly out of the need for new music for exercising. The format is challenging, though.
I fear a standard megathread would end up mostly ignored. Something like a weekly album discussion thread might be the most realistic, that way the topic is focused enough to actually have discussion in a forum as small as this, and if people don’t vibe with the album they just have to wait a week.
Another challenge is album selection. I am skeptical about it working if it’s just one person choosing albums, and simply crowdsourcing them runs the risk of getting stuck with anime music or something for multiple weeks. Either it would have to be a top new album from something like Pitchfork, or we would have to form a central council (tongue in cheek, I am not a dork) to curate a varied selection from user suggestions and write a little blurb for them.
I do not have a degree in running internet forums though, I could be totally wrong about all of this.
I like the ideas. I also have a strong belief that worrying about which idea works or not isnt worth a debate its better to have ideas and throw them out and see what sticks. Not at the same time though and run with whatever works.

I think focusing threads on a specific album/song is also better for searchability and late discussion/necromancy.

I agree with your analysis: just sharing links to tracks is not enough. Nobody is clickin on that. And nobody is discussing it without some prior experience or an angle of discussion.
Some kind of guided topic, or even a structure for adding new discussions with purpose and depth would go a long way.
Megathread, song/artist/etc of the month would be an easy start (tho divisive because there are so many, who picks, all that). But even just some kind of expectation or structure around why are you posting this, how does it make you feel, what do you expect others might get out of it, I think could go a long way to having some more meaningful discussion. Hell, even just starting with a review structure could be an easy start.
Posting a track is something you can see on any website, but a personal review from a comrade? That’s something unique we can have here.
I was thinking genre topic. I like any and all music so can start a discussion on anything from classical to EDM to punk to prog to jazz to metal to folk to hiphop. If i start with a genre and collection of what im listening to in that area cos i tend to flip flop based on the time of year then those who i guess hate that genre with a passion can opt out.
Sub genres no too niche i want broad genre representation cos i dont really believe someone who listens to only industrial and wont even consider grindcore or numetal.
Possible to focus it down to eras maybe but even then dont wanna make it too niche

…OK, to be absolutely fair, the Mesa Boogie DC-3 is prone to component failure in its power amp section, and smell is one of the first indicators that you’ve lost a coupling capacitor and/or screen grid resistor (or two) and your power tubes are about to red plate and burn up. You’d give that thing a sniff every so often too. Mostly I just hit it with the instant-read thermometer, though.
…the sniff test is less helpful on the Peavey 6505 (or 5150, same diff) because it has the opposite problem. The traces on the PCB are just a little too narrow (even in the later revisions where they over-flow them with extra solder) and the fucking molex ribbon cables connecting the mains input to the power amp board are WAY too small, so what typically happens to those is that the tube heater supply circuit burns itself into oblivion because 6 VDC at whatever amperage is just a little more than the goddamned fucking 28 AWG wires in the accountant-friendly ribbon cable can take, so you will randomly lose heater supply current altogether. This is sometimes accompanied by a burning smell when the molex cooks, but once the wire is gone, you just don’t have tube heaters anymore. This can also affect the preamp stage’s tubes. So the sniff test works here, but really only as the catastrophic malfunction is actually happening.
…then there’s the Mesa Rectifier series, where it just looks like Randall Smith was on copious amounts of peyote and wanted to jam-pack as many parts as he could fit onto a single-layer PCB, and the end result looks like a new-old-stock Sprague orange drop capacitor spares bin threw up all over it. The traces on these boards are so fucking tiny, so petite, so demure, that it’s pointless even having protection fuses in-circuit because THE PCB IS THE FUSE. You’ll definitely smell this one if and when the magic smoke gets out.

I like this idea! I adore music and would love to see what comrades are listening to. Something I noticed a while ago is that a lot of the music I got really into listening to is western and there’s so much fantastic variety and artistry to be found outside that sphere, I just don’t know how or where to look.
And a discussion about songs, what they mean, and why they’re so powerful would be great. As is I feel very disinterested in just posting songs on their own to the music comm. I’ve done it a couple times but didn’t feel like continuing to do so

Mods can pin posts that stick to the comm itself. Admins have to pin for it to show up on the main page. I’d imagine site pin deserves some site discussion, but a comm pin can be done right now to test the idea out.

Do you have an idea for a first Mega? I can go into weird amounts of detail on the underground elements of most rock music and also know about a shit load of experimental stuff. I’ve wanted to do a super deep history of punk beginning with like the proto proto formations of rock music and going from there. My best friend is also a giant fucking music geek, we talked for 2 hour about Deep Purple’s specific influences via other bands on crust punk. Ive been working my way through all thr Throbbing Gristle live tapes and wanna talk about first wave industrial big time as well
