The scary thing is I think Americans are less racist than Europeans and Asians, Americans are just presented with more opportunities to be racist.

My ex-wife’s grandparents lived just outside Chicago. Her grandfather used to hang out at the local mall, because he wanted to practice his Spanish by talking to random Latino families that passed by. He was so casually racist, that he would occasionally have someone threaten to kick the shit of him over something he said…and he had absolutley no idea why they were even mad at him. And I’m not kidding, he was probably the sweetest old man you’re ever going to meet…would give anyone the shirt off his back, and genuinely didn’t mean any of it in a negative way. He was just so saturated in white privilege, that had no idea that most of the things he said were completely inappropriate.
As a Canadian, I always marveled at the idea that he was “one of the nice ones”. That if you put him on one end of the racist spectrum, there was an entire range of people out there, that were progressively worse than him. And in US culture…this was just “normal” behavior.
There is certainly a difference between oblivious accidental racism and intentional hatred based racism. Neither are good, but one is certainly a bigger problem.
I could argue that it’s actually the oblivious accidental racism that is the bigger problem because that is what reinforces structural and system racism. The blatant rager is more visible and obviously dangerous, so can be countered or avoided fairly easily.
Maybe we have different ideas of the oblivious racist. They should have their rights taken away kinda people I would group in with the hateful ones.
I think we agree on who we’re talking about, but I’m just talking about scale. The hateful ones are an immediate threat to the people around them, but the oblivious ones are a far larger number of people and thus drive societal forces that cause statistical problems that cumulatively do more damage than one-off murders and such.
I mean — immigrants and people of color, especially balck women, have been shouting at us for generations that we are a racist country.
We started as a racist country, we inspired other countries to be racist (al la Jim Crow inspiring Hitler).
We’ve ALWAYS been this racist, it was just that for a little while people were a bit more quiet about it.
I just think white people are really good at pretending bad things aren’t happening all around them, just as long as it’s not to them.

Not to simplify too much, but the “they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the dogs” guy won a national election.
That was really the moment that solidified for me that a significant portion of the people of this country are irredeemable.
Racism is the cornerstone of Republican power. its why they are so hostile to anything that threatens racism, like education, and empathy, and moral values.

Let’s not forget that non-white period can be incredibly racist, too. Asian cultures can be very racist as well, even against different Asian cultures, but especially against black, south Asian, middle eastern, central Asian (collectively, brown) folks. Asians often see themselves as"one of the good ones" workout realizating they’re in line after the black and brown people.

russian bots came on the scene suddenly on the reddit around 2016, right after trump won his 1st stolen election. i was calling out how news article are associated with russia quite alot, one of the first significant things happen in 2018, banning were becoming increasingly common of misconstrued critcisim of the conservatives. now every other large sub had become hypersensitive over the talk of potential racism in any form. Putin figured out early on they can use this as a distraction, and it worked.

Enabling racists is bad, I’m actually not arguing against that. Racists may represent the U.S. right now, that does not mean that most Americans are racist.
