News@lemmy.world•Massive ICE Goon ID Leak Halted by Cyber Attack From Russia
101·2 hours agoNever ceases to amaze me that people refuse to believe or need to be reminded that Russia, China and others are actively and aggressively trying to undermine political and social stability in the US. Social media troll farms and bots, hacks of infrastructure, and apparently now preventing leaks of information detrimental to trump’s SS.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•A sampling of the responses to a tweet about ICE shooting out a 21-year old's eye in Santa Ana.
1·2 hours agoIs that Threads? If so, f**k Threads. I participated around election time. It was overrun (and probably silently still is) with reich wing troll farm tools and bots. The month or two leading up to the election saw a flood posts that were outright lies regarding grocery prices, gas prices, housing prices, racist, AI images JAQing off, immigration and a dozen other easily verifiable hotbutton issues that were twisted up into lies.
And as soon as trump won?
Dead f***ing silence. They all went dark.
I deleted my account. It’s every bit the cesspool of bots and trolls as Twitter is.
Who comments on other’s liquid level in a mug?

News@lemmy.world•Use of AI to harm women has only just begun, experts warn
12·2 hours agoI’m highly ambivalent about the use of AI for porn. On one hand it’s unequivocally bad when used to make porn or images of unwilling and unknowing people, doubly so when shared publicly and/or used maliciously.
OTOH it allows creation of whatever fetish or kink someone might have that might be difficult to deal with outside of fantsy and harms nobody so long as it remains contained.
I can’t get into the psychology of it, I’m not smart enough, I don’t know if casual use of such imagery bleeds over into real life problems. Obsessive use would obviously be a problem, but that would likely be a problem with or without AI.

1·2 hours agoI know Parks got all the fame while this lady got very little recognition, but it makes me wonder how many other acts of defiance on buses like this that got no attention.

14·14 hours agoSince when does the DoJ base their decisions on how to enforce the law on public opinion? What the ever loving f**k kind of law is that? Oh, the fake kind they make up as they go along.

Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•Sometimes I forget how awesome Linux Gaming isEnglish
1·22 hours agoI wasn’t going to bother responding to this comment because the question is ridiculous. Asking me which distro caused issues is absurd, I don’t file away what I had for lunch a month ago much less what distro caused me grief five years ago. I’ve used Mint, Manjaro, Mandriva, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Ubuntu LTE, Damn Small Linux, Raspbian, CrunchBang, Kali, Puppy, Drauger and probably a half-dozen more I’ve forgotten about. All had pluses and minuses, most got dumped after an update or upgrade caused an incompatibility, or it didn’t work with the hardware I had, that pissed me off when something I spent a great deal of time setting up stopped working or I got that black screen. My most reliable are my Raspbian systems, over 400 days of trouble-free uptime. Why dig up this old thread? Because literally today I had two distros shit the bed. My dual boot quit because I have no idea why, it disappeared from GRUB and won’t boot when added back. I have a strictly linux PC that I use for backing up DVDs and archiving old software among other things, and I hooked up a second older DVD to it and got the image posted after doing and update/upgrade. Manjaro. Another couple hours of troubleshooting and probably a reinstall. Awesome.

Technology@lemmy.world•What if the Internet Goes Down? - 15 Jan, 7PM CETEnglish
1·22 hours agoYep, but what we had access to was far, far different than what we see today. I wouldn’t have a problem with basic features like FTP, telnet, newsgroups or whatever, but the content will be limited. Gonna be back to dialup speeds.

Technology@lemmy.world•What if the Internet Goes Down? - 15 Jan, 7PM CETEnglish
2·22 hours agoI’m not sure compression would solve the issue I mentioned - this would be probably more akin to using Napster to DL a song in 2001 via dialup, or trying to get an image off a newsgroup at best. I’m not saying it wouldn’t be useful, just very limited. Like I said, you’re not getting a full distro this way.

91·24 hours agoI don’t think you’re going to be downloading a linux distro over this system. It’s probably just going to be text and the most basic data,

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How to create great discussions on Lemmy?
9·1 day agoAsk a decent question in a reply without engaging in argumentative fuckery, like appeals to hypocrisy, trying to be right via technicality or specificity, etc.
Add relevant info without the aforementioned arguments.
Add humor - hopefully without derailing the entire discussion like reddit does in a fight for upvotes.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do you think a socialist President would win the 2028 election? Would they use the exact methods used by Zohran Mamdani which earned him the office of Mayor of NYC?
3·1 day agoBut as long it sounded like he was addressing their fears, the most frightened people struggling to make ends meet latched onto whatever false hope he gave them.
Bit of a differenceI should point out – trump addressed their fears by giving them someone to blame with at best a nominal economic statement. LGBTQ, libs, Biden, “elites”, brown people, foreign countries, etc. were all to blame.
He never actually had a plan to offer anyone on how he was going to fix things other than by punishing the scapegoats. “I’ll lower prices” vs a boring, difficult to understand, years-long effort to maneuver industry and economics in a positive direction for the middle and lower classes.
Meh. Cold doesn’t bother me too much. But it being dark at 4:30? Yeah, that can get fucked.
Nope. Anticheat won’t work.

Theee things: He’s absolutely stupid. He’s a self-centered narcissist. He’s immune to consequences.
The confluence of the two and the power he has lets him do a lot of self-serving…well, everything. From money to bullying to whatever.
And his position protects him from any consequences. Which lets him keep doing everything he’s been doing.
