i think one of them is: karma
One button to AI generate your posts.
Dick pic sharing button, believe it or not was shot down.
That’s a shame, Lemmy needs more dick pics.
Ads
Unpopular take: dumb, non-targetted, ads could create revenue for server providers which may increase service quality and availability
If ads started to come on Lemmy, I would just stop using Lemmy itself and do everything through RSS.
If RSS would not work anymore, I would probably just leave.
It could also alienate your audience when you inevitable shift towards the more profitable side, which is beeing business friendly and not human friendly.
Agree and only if theres a shift. Distrowatch has had ads for decades for example
Embedded MIDIs
I was there, Gandalf. My speakers still forgotten near full volume from my earlier Napster binge.
*Actually I remember one single time this was awesome.
I was into this webcomic called Life of Riley, and it was finally hitting the series climax where the main zeitgeist had broken free from Lillith’s mind control and turned on her releasing a burst of his aura at her with the sfx noise, “SHA!”
And on that single strip they embedded Initial D’s crazy for love just right so that just as you’re reading that panel (probably hopefully), the song goes “SHA!” and starts building to its crescendo as the fight is ramping up.
Shit was fire
My GeoCities site had some dope midis
Any kind of algorithm that determines what I see. I get to cultivate my own experience by collecting what I like and muting/blocking what I don’t. I don’t need a script that says, “Oh, I see you stopped for a moment to check the comments on a single post on c/roombaswithfeet. Here’s a nonstop barrage of everything else in that community and all related communities.”
2% accounts decide the majority of content that we see.
Tbf, the “Hot” feed does use an algorithm, though a simple one that simply weights the upvotes on new posts higher. Plus you’re not required to use that feed
I dislike this only because algorithm has a bad name now. New is an algorithm. Top is an algorithm. Hot and active are both more complex algorithms.
You don’t want personalized algorithms or tracking.
I know it’s pedantic and words change over time but after taking the class on Algorithms it just bugs me. Any math equation is an algorithm.
I was a data analyst/engineer in the government when we got told our government wanted a list of all algorithms used across government.
We had to seek clarity on that one, in the end it turned out there was media attention around computer decision making in application processes and they were wanting to track that.
Trust them to require a paragraph of reasoning around every
ifstatement
I would like to stand up for the real meaning of the word “algorithm” - there’s a sorting algorithm which shows you the most recent posts, for example. Indeed, the default “hot” sort is already a more advanced algorithm which uses votes and time to show you what is likely to be “good” as decided by users. It’s just not driven by AI or subtle data about how you navigate the page.
I actually think Mastodon could use a better algorithm to help old but interesting posts get a chance since I’m not checking it every minute… But how to do it in a way that doesn’t suck is hard. Of course, there’s an easy way to avoid it becoming a dark pattern, which is to keep it fully optional.
I think you mean hidden or secretive algorithms with malicious agendas and dark patterns like how the corporate social media systems work. Yes, those would suck.
I like the current list of algorithm options that work as described.
Every post has an AI summary of the comments pinned at the top. You can’t disable it. It hallucinates.
has AI summary
it hallucinates
Why did you repeat that line?
paid posts (lol)
Round corners, purple background, you know, “new” design.
You know you can use any front-end you want for Lemmy, right?
I like Photon personally.
It’s funny you say that, my front end has material you and I just changed my wallpaper.

Public votes
A “helpful assistant” button for writing comments.
A button which makes a random person on the planet paralyzed.
A one-time button for only one person at a time. If you press it, someone you don’t know will die, but you will receive ten million dollars.
Then the button moves on to the next person. Someone you don’t know.
[Ominous music]
That would fast lead to humanity extinction. There are also people risking a 50/50 chance
I’m not an authority on the story, but I interpreted it to mean that those who reject the button/refuse to press it are not eligible to be killed by it. The first person to use the button might kill a random person (although I like to think that it just doesn’t take a life then), but after that, it just kills the previous button presser.
A 1:1 redesign that copies New Reddit.
I don’t see how one more shitty frontend for lemmy would ruin anything. Just add it to the pile.
If it became mandatory, I feel like it kinda would actually.
But you could only do that on the instance level, so people could just switch or setup their own instance that uses a different frontend. There is no way to force a specific UI on all of lemmy.
Good thing it’s just a made up hypothetical!
Karma, a full JavaScript interface that is flashy, and an AI auto moderator. We must imitate reddit if we want to destroy Lemmy properly /s
Mbin has karma, so while not Lemmy specifically, it does exist on the fediverse. So karma farmers are possible here.
The app kicks you in the balls every time you scroll past a post without reading it.
Owww!
