Speaker Mike Johnson said on Friday that he stood by the spending deal he negotiated with Democrats to avert a government shutdown, spurning demands from ultraconservatives who have pressured him to jettison the agreement.
The announcement, after days of public silence about what he would do, all but guaranteed that Mr. Johnson will have to work with Democrats in the coming days to pass a short-term bill to keep the government funded past a pair of deadlines on Jan. 19 and Feb. 2, going back on his promise to never bring up another temporary spending measure.
Mr. Johnson had been facing mounting pressure from the hard-right Republicans, who are furious at the spending levels in the bipartisan plan, to find an alternative. They have begun dangling the threat of forcing a vote to oust the Louisiana Republican, subjecting him to the same fate as his predecessor.
Enjoyed your three months of speakership, Mike. I’ll miss hearing about how you share your masturbation time with your son.
🤣
This is the new normal. Every few weeks, passing a short-term bill to avoid shutdown. And republicans voting out the speaker until they find the one that will actually shut down the government.
Remember when they passed annual budgets every year? Good times.
When was the last time an actual annual budget was passed and signed? I honestly can’t remember.
Was it under Obama?
I think it was pre-Obama but I don’t remember either.
2016 was the last time they adopted a budget. The last time it was done on time was 1996.

It’s been normal for a while now
Johnson has a lot more spine than I expected, I’ll give him that. He’s still horrible, though. If we’re lucky the spending bill goes through and then he gets removed anyway.
Good for him. I can’t think of anything nice to say about him but he has now reached the very low bar of keeping his word.
He hasn’t actually acted yet, so it is still just his words.
Good point
Don’t be fooled. He’s letting a few things slide with cooperation from Democrats to make you believe that he’s reasonable and moderate. He’ll come to collect on social issues soon.
Can’t wait for this idiot to get ousted so that we can go for another twenty rounds of Speaker elections, until some other idiot is finally duped into taking the stand.
It would only take a handful of Republicans to vote with the Dems for Jeffries and then for actual compromise legislation to get the House working again.
But they won’t, because the GOP is a cult.
Oh man…
This has been great.
