Just making you all aware of this topic -https://lemmynsfw.com/comment/137224

Please refrain from claiming names that you have no real interest in. Moderation should be based on your passion for a genre or model, not on just “collecting” communities as souvenirs.

Otoh, imo, moderating a community to keep it out of the hands of spammers (they will come to Lemmy soon enough), squatters and bad actors is a legitimate reason.

Thoughts?

How would you handle the handoff to someone who is passionate about it if you claimed it for the second reason, or if you made it because it didn’t exist yet and you wanted to make the space for others to post in but are not in a position to actually moderate?

My personal opinion is that if someone can demonstrate that passion within the community more than myself, I would gladly transfer (give up top mod position of) the community to that individual. I’ve done that on Reddit before and I will do so here also 😊.

Update: tbh, I have no idea if the concepts of top mod and any hierarchy levels as on Reddit also work the same way on Lemmy - need to find out later

As for your second part, if one is not able to moderate a community, then one should post a note in sub to look for responsible others to add and eventually transfer. An example is at !deepthroat@lemmynsfw.com

Hope I understood your questions correctly…

Personally i reached out to the existing reddit mods to see if they wanted to take over, and if they are i let them. Otherwise i would just look through who seems to be posting in the community, maybe make a post about looking for additional mods, and go from there
