To my fellow olds - If you suffered in life and want others to suffer because you turned out fine - you in fact, did not turn out fine. Enough with the “kids these days”.

it’s from mastodon

If you feel bitter about it, there’s something wrong with what you went through. (Genuinely)

They AND you deserve better, and we get there by being supportive.

    For real.

Also, hitting kids is counterproductive. I don’t care that you’re not in prison or whatever your metric is for “fine.”

This man speaks truth. Our suffering was not edifying or necessary. It shouldn’t have happened and it needs to stop.

I agree with the message, though I have seen the phrase “kids these days” used in a broad variety of cases. I wouldn’t say every older person using it is wishing the younger ones to suffer

I feel like the most common connotation of “kids these days” is a specific and negative one. It is often accompanied by the phrase “back in my day.”

Yes negative but not always about wishing suffering onto youth. Examples: “kids these days have no manners”, “kids these days have no respect for xyz”, etc.

I agree, it doesn’t have to mean they should suffer. I often say something similar when talking about MTX in games, foe example. “Kids these days” accept it as a given and are indoctrinated into liking it. They’ll look at skin releases with excitement and look forward to them. Meanwhile I’m over here hating that this is what’s become normal and wish we could go back to enjoying playing the game, and sometimes getting cosmetics as rewards for that.

My brother shared with me an Instagram reel of a guy saying that in the first Pokemon games, your rival would choose a starter pokemon that counters yours, while in modern ones it’s the reverse. It reeked of “kids these days”, as if children were designing Pokemon games.

That does bug me a bit. I know, it’s a game meant to be accessible for children… BUT, the starters don’t have their type moves in the beginning (or at least they didn’t) so it didn’t matter. The first battle was a scratch vs tackle type battle then you had the opportunity to catch something they’re weak to before the next one.

Pokémon now, even worse than back in the day, is a game where you can use only your starter and just over level them and beat the game easily. But… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
