There’ll always be people with too much time on their hands, no empathy, and a complete lack of regard for anyone else but themselves. Doing this sort of thing is funny to them because they’re not the ones affected by the damage they cause.

My school received an IP ban from Wikipedia because some class mates found it funny to vandalize some articles.
My school is also ip-banned from Wikipedia, I assume for the same reasons.
If you really get into it as a hobby, you can absolutely vaporize vandalism with the right tools. I used to patrol Recent Changes all the time and his IP would’ve been blocked within minutes. You can easily rack up thousands of contributions this way; I put it on my resume and it helped get my current job (we keep an internal wiki).
