    I think it’s just a west of the Mississippi thing… I grew up all over and midwesterners east of the Mississippi have n+3 lawn chairs. N being the number of adults in the family.

    West of the Mississippi it’s the same n+3 formula, but now n includes all the children, and it’s more like n^3. I live in San Diego, and we have 15 lawn chairs for 5 adults, plus a patio couch. That’s seating for 18 adults in our front and back yards. I don’t know why. I haven’t collected even a single outdoor chair in 44 years of life… My idea of an outdoor seat is a bare rock.
