Valve was very open regarding what information they collect. Outside of the data they already process via the steam client like what games you are playing to make fitting store recommendations, they only receive any operational data from the Frame when you send bug reports, which you must approve for every single one of them. I have a Steam account now since HalfLife2 has released with over 1400 titles in it, and i never got any ads on my phone for even a single PC game.

At least you OWN the thing, not the other way around.

It’s a decision of conscience. Do you:

• get a product that respects you and will be supported by Valve like all their hardware (the ancient Steam Link still works fine!) at a higher price or
• get a product that spies on you from all angles and sells your data to everyone who wants it, even the police, at a lower price point, while it might be become legacy hardware at the drop of the hat?

I know where i will be spending my cash.

Edit: one of the reviewers of the comparison between the Quest 3 and the Frame at GN started getting advertisements on his private phone for VR stuff after working with the Quest. That’s the level of privacy the Quest offers you: none.

If you took Metas glasses and removed all options to exfiltrate data from them, and run a local model on them - they would be a great tool! The issue is mainly where all that collected data gets sent - if it can’t send data (maybe allow web search using an API which only allows normal search terms, not stuff like BASE64 encoded data), then nearly all of the privacy issues go away, and they could still be really handy.

It is an active decision of Meta to make these things as invasive as they can get. We should demand better.

The situation in Europe and Amazon is at least not as bad as when buying directly from China. I myself invested a bit more for a charger with 2 USB ports and 100W, which cost me around 30€ - still cheaper than the one from Valve (I have one of those too, but that one is currently on 18650 Recharge Duty)

I would agree with you if this measure weren’t for convicted stalkers, which means that the alternative would be a prison sentence. This is by far more humane and allows the convict to at least live a normal life if he behaves.

Whatever they would have added as an PSU and have you pay for it a premium, you can buy for next to nothing online with better features and performance, while not generating a bunch of e-waste if you don’t need one (like me - i doubt they would have added a 100W charger with 2 USB-C ports).

If the police walks in to secure evidence, i am sure that you can implement a mechanism to freeze the current state of the storage. If it is public knowledge that businesses are not allowed by law to store surveillance data longer than a week, this will also be reflected in peoples behavior.

Only possible alternative i know of is what Bluesky is doing - separate out the identity part into another service. Changing the location of the identity can then be resolved by updating the id that a comment is attached to; this edit can then be lazily be federated to prevent long standing accounts from grinding smaller instances to a halt.

But that needs a lot of changes for a small payout - if you are on lemmy to establish a following, you probably haven’t understood Lemmy.

How long recordings are stored is a point of discussion - i say for everything involving the police, when taking their overblown budgets into account, 48-72 hours are plenty.

And if this fuckwit does not have access, that’s how it should be, and that’s the same reason why he shouldn’t have any private recordings too (if we ignore that Meta is using that data for whatever they want)

What about a simple camera watching the floor with automatic deletion of data after 48 hours? Why should fucking META of all companies and the garbage manager have unlimited access to this material instead of being stored in a way that doesn’t fuck all clients over?

Why do you have such insecurites that need a fucking all encompassing nanny in form of an abusive GM?

AI enables a new form of fully automated implementation of disinformation, societal violence and lethal force, completely disconnected from all morals, ethics and second thoughts a person might have. When the tools of suppression are not wielded by a human that might decided that things are going too far, there also isn’t any risk of these tools getting turned against whoever activated them.

If you cannot see that, then you are either already one of their victims through societal manipulation or one of the people switching these systems on.
