I have managed to go out and get fed and get supplies so I can shelter in place the rest of the weekend. I live right on Albert Park lake and it’s madness everywhere, and very noisy

Oh gosh the body is SORE. Did a Pilates core workout that really hit me when I got up to pee at 4am. Had to do today’s squats in small chunks, but got them done in between a trip out to the Yarra Valley for cheese and wine.

Ouch! I did my extremely slow and gentle squats after a trip to IKEA with the kids. I’ve been looking into equipment-free exercises for toning and improving my shape without trashing my joints. Today I did a few exercises from a chair (seated) workout video. It seems like nothing doing at first, but by the time you hit the 50ish mark you’re starting to feel odd muscles activate. I never got the hang of Pilates, I think I’d have to do it in front of a mirror to get it right and there’s insufficient space in front of mirrors at my place.

I stayed up working until 7am, then slept the rest of the morning in preparation for working again tonight.

Two 12 hour night shifts certainly make it feel like I’m having a very loooong weekend too!

I sometimes miss having a long weekend at the same time as everyone else, but condensing all the work into 12 hour shifts basically means I get a long weekend every week, so I can’t really complain! And they pay out the day off in leiu for the public holiday, so the extra pay this week is a bit nice as well.

Some teenagers beat up and actually killed a guy at our local train station. Of course all the Facebook comments are about machetes, making sure they get tried as adults, and whether they’re out on bail already.

I’d like to know whether the attack was random or if they knew the guy. We’ve almost made it illegal for kids to be online or outside, so what do people expect them to do? The only people who care about what kids are up to are people who hate them and don’t want to see kids anywhere. If only we had some larger social project kids could feel like a part of

How dare they be young in public! No good will come of this! /s

I do agree that some kind of social project would be helpful - sport and religion used to do this function, but nowadays religion has been hijacked by extremists (of all kinds) and is no longer even geographically inclusive, and sport is either too ‘professional’ or is too much bother/expense to be inclusive. There really isn’t an obvious forum of endeavour for those that aren’t ‘good at sport’ or whatever.

My thesis is that the most addictive drug in the whole universe is - excellence. Once experienced, nothing else comes close. I fully endorse mobilizing community resources to find forums of endeavour that allow nearly everybody to experience excellence in some form or another.

That’s horrific. But I really really really don’t agree with the explanation for murder being because someone was banned from social media or didn’t play outside enough, so of course they’re gonna go murdering?! You’re right about one thing though, these kids are growing up in families where no one cares about them. The parents are disinterested in what the kid is doing socially, where they are at 3am on a Tuesday, if they are doing ok in school, if the 10 knives and 3 machetes the kid has in their bedroom seems normal. The kids themselves are motivated by approval of their peers, kudos, and no repercussions. I don’t know what the answer is.

I don’t mean there’s a direct link between the social media ban and attacks like these, more that so much effort is spent legislating kids out of public life instead of finding ways to engage with them

I had a breakthrough today in some of my understanding of relativistic physics. 🐱🚀

      I think. 🤔

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_dilation

      spoiler

so if tau ceti is 13 light years away , it takes HM 4 years to get there and only just over 2 years for the beatles to get back, it’s still 13 years Earth time for the HM and 13 for the beatles , regardless of how fast they go, because each is measuring time and distance differently and velocity is not additive

Yep. That seems right. Everyone has their own rulers and clocks. It’s all consistent within the observers frame. The paradox only happens when you try to reconcile between the two.

I studied relativity - it was my favourite (general relativity even more!)

Imagine being the first homo sapien to pat a wolf?

There is a human, long deceased and who’s name is lost to time, who got to be the first to pay a dog.
