It’s kinda funny tbh. Seeing all those ppl complaining yet still staying there. Or better yet: “protesting” by putting content in which they complain, directly on those platforms. If Twitter does shit and u still use it, u show that the company that runs it can continue doin whatever it’s doin.

      “But what’s the alternative?!”

Blogs, actually updating your own damn websites, RSS/atom, mastodon, email.

Take a look at the Berkshire Hathaway website if you think your website needs to be fancy. They made $300B last year and still have a Geiko ad and haven’t updated the style since like 1997.

You can even run a website for free with GitHub pages. You can host a website from. Google cloud store bucket. Portugal The Man’s website is a Google Sheet.

ehhh, I don’t see many folks typically caring about anyone’s individual reasoning for complaining about or leaving $service.

maybe if it’s part of a wave of reasoning like “leaving Twitter because of antisemitic content” or similar, it would have more reaching impact to the company.

I’m really getting tired of this obnoxious cycle of explaining the fediverse in kindergarten terms.

Only to get “I don’t get it” as a response and a refusal to elaborate.

“What don’t you get?” “I dunno”

Like at this point I can only assume:

      • You weren’t listening.
      • You don’t understand anything about this.
      • You don’t care, despite the fact you asked.

So for the sake of being as petty and obnoxious, my explanation will be as such:

The fediverse is like spaghetti, and each string of spaghetti is what we call an instance. Each string touches the rest of the strings and can hear the other spaghetti strings talking. Some strings are so mean and rude that other strings decide to put their fingers in their ears and go “LALALALALALA” so they can’t hear or see them.

Now, each string of spaghetti has a name, like this one which is yummyicecream․com. And then there’s this other string cottoncandydelicious․xyz. If you, a spaghetti user like icecream a lot, then you probably will go to yummyicecream․com and make an account. Let’s name this account rockyroad. You are the user @rockyroad and since your spaghetti strand is yummyicecream․com, The user name everyone can see is @rockyroad@yummyicecream.com. Now lets say another user licoricelover is on cottoncandydelicious․xyz then they would be @licoricelover@cottoncandydelicious․xyz.

NOW STOP!! STOP!! WOAH PUT THAT SPAGHETTI STRING THERE DOWN BUCKEROO!! Why are you going to cottoncandydelicious․xyz? You don’t need to do that, you just need to go to the string you made account on, yummyicecream․com and log in to your account, rockyroad. Now you see a post from @licoricelover@cottoncandydelicious.xyz on your feed.

“Wha wha wha, buh buh buh” you say as you drop your fork and start throwing your bowl on the floor. Calm down! It’s okay, this is the FEDIVERSE! Users from one string of spaghetti can talk to users in almost every string of spaghetti in the rest of the bowl. Now as I said earlier, not all strings can hear the other strings of spaghetti, because they decided some other strings of spaghetti are yucky. Like ihatepizza․net. What meanie hates pizza? Well many of the other spaghetti strands decided that particular strand was gross and they didn’t want to show their posts and users on their string of spaghetti.

But lets say, the string your own made an bad decision and decided they didn’t want to show their users posts from users on “peasaregross․org” and they blocked them. But your best friend nerfornothin is on peasaregross․org. Well you can decide to take your account from the yummyicecream․com string of pasta to the cottoncandydelicious․xyz string of pasta. cottoncandydelicious․xyz will let you see posts from users on the peasaregross․org string of pasta.

Mastodon is not all that different from twitter. But mastodon is a bowl of spaghetti, and Twitter is a big pasta shell. You can still block users, you can still make posts and have conversations. But when the fork comes to eat up some of the spaghetti, then some strings of spaghetti might be gone, but the bowl of spaghetti still exists. But if the shell gets eaten by the fork, it’s all gone! 😢

Mastodon is like email for instant messages with permanent conversation threads. That’s about as relatable as it can get. The user addresses are highly similar. It communicates interoperably just like emailed does. Making a single uniform system out of hundreds of different servers. You can be on hotmail.com or gmail.com or any other email provider and mail anyone on any other mail provider. That’s basically Mastodon as well.

Someone described the fediverse as the social media of email.

You make an email account with any provider you want and you can talk to any other email in existance.

A creator I follow: “Twitter is becoming worse and worse by the day!”

    Me: “Come to Mastodon!”

ACIF: “No, that is full of techbros, and which instance do I even choose?”

(At least it’s not as bad as a former favorite VTuber, who after early criticisms of the Twitter takeover and Elon’s personality, decided to “grow up” and like the “person who’s saving the world” (Musk is now a climate change denialist, and I think he’s just a deregulation promise away from announcing the petrol engine Teslas.))

Cannot really tell you it since it was in private streams (especially not on a public forum), and she’s pretty infamous for changing narrative around herself, then going full denial regarding the past. Some of which is granted since she did things in the past that are under NDA, others were just trying to please the bullies (which she got more thanks to relatively nonexistent moderation), at the cost of her own sanity.

It’s one thing if you accidentally spilled info on personal stuff you didn’t want to reveal, and it’s another that you pretend you don’t have the terminal horniness to try to please the haters (which you can’t the moment someone leaks a private stream), and to lie to both yourself and the fans (many of which actually liked that fact about you).

No, it’s mostly a different thing.

VTuber means Virtual YouTuber. However, some VTubers are like that. The best among them are like Suris, who makes commentary videos on politics, religion, etc. And then there’s those, who just watch a selection of YouTube, TikTok, etc. videos for funzies, with VShojo (a VTuber talent agency) being a bit infamous for that.

See the brilliant part about Lemmy, and the fediverse in general, is that you can create an account on a different instance to get away from bogus moderation and still have access to the federated content you saw before; in short, you can switch platforms without switching platforms. This was one of the things that attracted me to Lemmy in the first place – it’s not just another Reddit clone that will enshittify the same way Reddit did in a couple years once the people who moved to it get complacent. The cost of switching platforms here is effectively zero.

Shitty moderation is on every platform is specially up an coming like lemmy, if one should leave a platform is for the lack of moderation.

Moderation means people care, even though I am quite against it. I believe that a platform with no moderation would be illegal because pedos and other kinds of psycos exist, however other than that, everything in the legal realm or greyish ( piracy and stuff ) should roam free even if it’s something perverse or completely stupid there is a downvote button for that, I don’t remember the last time I used it.

Anyways for me the last straw was the api change that back stab on developers left me with a real sour taste in my mouth.

I despise that bluesky is so much more engaging than mastodon.

And as soon as Al Yankovich, Ed Yong, Jeff Sharlet, MOMA, or any of my other favorite writers, journalists and entertainers get busy on Mastodon, I’ll totally pass on bluesky… but in it’s current state it is vastly more engaging than Mastodon.

Even Jake friggin’ Tapper is occasionally (and not even awkwardly) hilarious on Bluesky!?? Weird but welcome vibe over there.

A lot of creators are thinking like that unfortunately. A lot of leftist YouTubers instead are banking on BlueSky rather than the Fediverse, to the point they sometimes hold giveaways for BlueSky invites, which wouldn’t be a bad thing, if they did mention Mastodon, etc.

Fun fact, a lot of people don’t know that Google (and by extension, youtube) has a strong far-right bias. I remember having to look up a meme so I went into incognito and the second video on their front page was literal nazi propaganda downplaying the Palestinian genocide.

But if that isn’t enough for you, they literally got sued for protecting MULTIPLE pedophiles while they were grooming kids on their platform!! They knew what was happening and not only allowed it to happen but actively went out of their way to protect them. Multiple times. Holy shit.
