My terrible idea is that the world move to an 8 day week. Everyone works (at most) 4 days on, 4 days off. School is 4 on, 4 off. Two alternating shifts. Its always the weekend for half of everyone and everything is always open. I guarantee a roomful of smart people will be able to tear this idea to shreds. We could invent cool new names for all the days of the week though.
I like that idea, only problem i have is picking who works which days. Like i want days off with my partner but if we are on opposite shifts we wont see each other.
I’m over 30, I don’t want to work anymore, period. But I can’t live off what I have or off the land, so to the grinder I go.
30h/week since 2024, I am never going back.
Instead of working, I am just playing Oblivion Remastered all day today.
I’m so happy for you!
They said through clenched teeth while white knuckeling their desk, waiting to get off work so they can go back to playing Oblivion Remastered
What do you do, if you don’t mind my asking?
Web development in North Germany, for a small agency. We mainly work with WordPress and Typo3, which is used by the government, clinics and other “bigger” institutions a lot here.
I actually like PHP (most people seem to hate it :D), so it’s a good job.
Yeah I’ve pretty much gotten used to it, whenever I hear about human-friendly working conditions, it’s never coming from the USA lol. I still hold out hope.
Happy for you regardless. :)
That’s cool, I’m glad for you. Genuinely, I’m hoping someday that I can maneuver myself into a position like yours.
you no longer have that kind of energy because you have a 5 day work week.
Wait, so if I only worked four days a week I’d have the energy to work five days a week?
I work a four day workweek, but I also work 25% longer every workday than most people do.
I’m grateful for my extra day off, but I’m also tired every workday. And a lot of non workdays.
I’m pushing my boss for 4 tens right now, if I’m already there what’s two more hours? But most of my job is waiting for something to break (maintenance). I want 3 day weekends so badly.
4 10s is the way to go 100%. A day to rest, a day to play, and a day to get shit done at home.
Only thing better is being self-employed lol. Some days I work 6-8hrs, some days it’s like 3hrs and some office stuff, some days I barely do anything. Most days I’ve got something to do though.
I was a construction electrician tho, every time we got 4 10s some asshole would find a reason to have us there Friday anyway. I mean, sure, overtime. But I’m tired bro.
Electrician here as well, running a shop comes with its own set of shenanigans that I sometimes daydream about just working for someone. But then I remember the flexibility I have that wouldn’t be a thing otherwise.
Oh for sure. I don’t envy having any more responsibility than I do as a one-man-show lol. Regardless, it’s really wonderful being in charge of your own work.
It’s worthwhile in my eyes. Most people to whom I mention it say “I couldn’t work a ten hour day,” which is a valid perspective, but also I’d rather lose two hours a day over one day a week.
I would prefer 4x8 though.
My guy and I do 4 10s when we have the workload, and yeah, same deal. 3 day weekends are rad, but like hell if I have energy for anything after work on those other 4 days.
Some days I miss being a one-man show and being able to work just enough jobs to keep my bills paid and food on the table, but I wouldn’t be able to take on the more fun jobs by myself.
I’ve never been a one man show, but I definitely miss the days of freedom and relative lack of consequence. While most of my jobs over the last decade or so have been fairly engaging, I think my current job is the first one that really pushes me on a regular basis.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn, but also it can be hard to relax.
No.
(i want four day workweek)
i concur
no
Increase production with this one weird trick. Proletariats hate it.
Honestly as someone under 30 I could accept this. Obviously universal 4 day week would be better, but if this would sell the idea to the boomers it would be worth it.
The boomers are old a lot older than 30 though, so it would need to be a 4 day week for everyone over 60. At that point it’s barely useful anyways
Yeah but they don’t have a hate boner for 30-40-50 year old like they do for “young people”
“No man should have to work more than 40 hours per week!”
“Yeah, that seems pretty reasonable.”
“Women should be able to work for the same wages!”
“Of course. We should all have equal rights.”
“20 hours should be the new work week!”
“I don’t know, man. Seems pretty leftist. It’s not like we nearly doubled employment.”
Our grandparents earned enough as single earners to provide for their entire family and own a house.
Now 2 people work and they can barely pay rent on an apartment.
Its not hard to see why the right cries about the good old times, except somehow its the gays, and not the bourgeoisie that they believe are what caused the decline.
Agreed, and I feel like that’s what I’m getting at here. A family of five used to be able to exchange 40 hours of labor with the economy and at least get by. Now it’s 80 hours, and we’re struggling. The right is suggesting we put our children to work to make up the difference.
I think we’re on the same page.
Absolutely, just re-iterating using different words.
Oh, well, thank you then. Now I’m just envious that I wasn’t able to communicate my message as clearly and succinctly. Kudos to you.
Look at the bright side!
At least the bourgeoisie can provide for their ENTIRE family now.
Oh and there are probably more bourgeoisie than back then.

Well, I have some bad news for you… it gets worse.
I’m terms of working hours it could get better. You might end up doing 0 hours a week, because you’ll be unemployed.
It doesn’t have to! Or so I’ve heard. But it does seem to.
Living should only be for people with a will to live. I really don’t.

Not sure if telling them to kys or being supportive
Judging from the amount of down votes, I’m guessing people are thinking KYS
If it were easy, I really would be doing it. I am undergoing therapy, socializing more than I have ever been. Still, I just can’t get rid of this void inside me.
Well, speaking as someone who has processed their own ‘void’ - I came to the conclusion that not referring to it as some spectral thing really helped.
It’s not a void, my Dad was a drunk and I needed him to be my Dad. He wasn’t, and I have to fill in the gaps.
When I started addressing these things as they were, rather than as the unknowable void within my dark soul, they stopped being unknowable voids. Arguably my soul stopped being so dark, as well. Food for thought, YMMV.
Thank you so much. I will try that.
Things take time, hang in there!
Well I never suggested it was easy. Everything takes effort, no matter who you are. The important thing is just to do something and not nothing.
You got enough energy to be homeless?
True, being homeless looks exhausting.
Think about the shareholders!!!
They can hold a share of deez nuts.
Heh.
4 day work week or 6 hours work day tough?
Why not both ?
6 hours a day, 4 days a week, same pay. My productivity would be unchanged if not increase!
Yeah, I’d put in more effort for sure, but that’s also because I’m underpaid by about half right now, so that would even it out.
6 hours work day ftw
6 hours work week ftw
6 day work month though.
It’s equivalent to a four day work week
Somehow I get a similar energy like “young people’s work week should be 6 days” /lh
jokes on us, most peoples workweeks here is 6 days.
and some unlucky fucks will be looking at 10, 12 hour days. thats before considering the hours stuck in a packed bus because transportation sucks.
Oh, you get to keep your same yearly pay inflation adjusted, But you work one less day per week every two decades.
Hard disagree.
Present your argument.
Dont overwork those under 30 to become tired at 30. Give everyone the same minimum work hours. Aka, 4/5 ( aka 24h work week )
If the work is meaningful and fairly paid, then it kind of makes sense that some young people might choose to go all out while they’ve got the exuberance of youth.
Couple years ago I was doing a freelance project doing 133hr weeks for a few months straight. I found it very fulfilling. I am over 30.
You were not being micromanaged, and you were not sitting in a soulless, fluorescent cubicle next to 50 other drones being forced to do the same.
The environment and how workers are treated is just as much to blame as the total hours worked per week. Possibly more so.
I am a contract educator. Before COVID I was practically working sunup to sundown every single day of the week barring national holidays and I loved it. Because I am my own boss, it involves lots of travel, and I get to play with kids all day.
As fulfilling as the work itself was, the resulting negativity still negated it.
Putting forth a Herculean effort and having it be thankless or worse destroys you in a unique way.
Before COVID I was practically working sunup to sundown every single day of the week
That’s like 5h work days 1/4 of the year…must be nice
Lol found the European/Yankee
Down here in the South even in winter you’ve got easy 8hrs of daylight depending on where you are
Scandinavian, but yeah i was mostly joking with how useless “sunup to sundown” is as a measure of time because it varies wildly by season and location.
That makes sense haha. Yeah, it threw me off when I traveled to the UK in winter the first time after living in the US southeast my whole life. Got dark at like 4pm, my head was spinning XD
Christ how did you survive 😳
I dunno. It’s just one of those things in my life that I’ve grown accustomed to. I have adhd, so if I’m into something, I end up going all out on it to make up for my shortcomings in other areas. I think I’m in one of those cycles of trying to please really hard but resulting in trauma and being burnt out with ptsd. My whole life has been fighting this series of thankless, abusive managers and trying to improve myself and striving for excellence to please. Kinda funny though since I’m now so burnt out that I can’t work at 35 and have social anxiety so bad that I only leave the house about once a week. Every successive job I’ve ever had, I’ve had to dig deeper in order to pull magic tricks out of my ass, and when I do make the impossible possible, it’s not good enough or thankless or something. At least for now, I have literally nothing left to give, and am deeply depressed and under stimulated and anxiety ridden. So, “how did I survive?”Mmm, poorly. Not sure I was even surviving before that. What do you mean, survive? What does it mean to survive?I’m broken.
