Entered the comments just to suggest reading House of Leaves.

I’ll have to admit that I never got very far in it, but what I did read, I really liked. One day I’ll finish it… one day…

        Same.

I read that book right after taking like English 400: Theory and Criticism, so I was like “yeah it has footnotes but doesn’t every book have footnotes?” Then I recommended it to a friend who hadn’t read a book more complex than harry potter in 20 years, and her brain like caught fire.

There’s also “Book” by Robert Grudin. At one point

      spoiler

there’s an uprising and the footnotes rebel against the plot.

This is a reference to the book, House of Leaves§ by Mark Z. Danielewski.

§panda_abyss, in his seminal work on referring to House of Leaves, mentions this reference in the Lemmy† Thread “3. DFW 4. ibid”.

† I used to work as a tattoo artist you know.

The Denephew joke remains one of my all time favourites, and it was a footnote to a footnote.

Man did that dude need an editor who could stand up to him.

That said still liked infinite jest. His college graduation speech is also pretty good. Other stuff was hit or miss.

I really need to continue Infinite Jest. It took me ages to read like 60 pages.

It’s worth the exercise IMO. Was in a similar boat, then picked it back up after a year and a bit and finished it. I was happy I did, it’s a great book.

That said, if it doesn’t grab you, it doesn’t grab you. Nothing at all wrong with that, and it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea.
