Them: Dunno.
Me: Ah, great. So you actually have to be on British soil to make an application. So doesn’t it seem like a simple solution is to allow for people to apply from outside the country?

Or ask them how many people apply for asylum and how many get accepted, or how rigorous the process is. Crickets. Ask them how much we spend on asylum (negligible amount) crickets.
Now I don’t believe these people are all racist. They’ve just been lied to and sadly we have to reach them with compassion rather than belittling them. I’ve had success with one friend who I now see calling out other people we know.
