inspired by firefox 157. it’s time for me to vent my hate.

enough of this shit. enough rounded corners. enough “pills”. the tyranny of the pill-shaped element is killing my enthusiasm for the computer.

I’ve come to realize that what I hate the most about rounded corners isn’t their roundness (even though it’s ugly), but their lack of information density.

When everything is inside its own card with huge rounded corners, and every button is rounded, and every icon is also rounded, you end up wasting so much space. UIs feel clunky and really slow to navigate, and you have to obscure things behind more buttons because they don’t fit.

On the contrary, sharp corners fit a lot better on a UI, and they’re usually closely related with dense interfaces. I love dense interfaces, because I’ve come here to use the software efficiently, not have something esthetically pleasing but poorly functional.

As a side note, you can edit firefox’s userChrome.css and get your squarer corners back. I haven’t yet tried this on the new firefox, but I do use this snippet on all my computers, after mozilla rounded the corners more in a previous iteration of the UI.

Alright, I tried the snippet on the new version. It doesn’t seem to work. Maybe I’m forgetting something, but it appears like they changed the UI enough for the snippet to be useless. You can still probably make your own thing that works, but it sounds like a pain. For now, I won’t update my firefox browsers.

Pills have their place, but it’s not in normal, day to day buttons and frequently used UI elements.

Edit: Holy shit I just got the new Firefox update and they pilled fucking everything. It looks horrible.why can’t they just leave things alone?

IMO pills can work when used sparingly. Here is a system I’m building that uses pills as visual control elements. This is a screen that the user won’t interact with very much, but when they do, it’s important. More frequently the user will just view this screen to understand which user role has which permissions. The pill controls are directly clickable and cycle between three states when clicked. The design keeps a good separation between these important controls, makes them easy to cycle, makes any state change very readily apparent, and is understandable at a glance for any person just reading the screen. The Delete buttons, a different kind of important, are made distinct by their shape and have a confirmation stage. This is the design I settled on, that I think is a happy middle ground between readability, ease of control, understandability and reduction of redundant text and labels.

What Firefox did is an abomination.

Bill Atkinson, creator of QuickDraw, also hated them. Steve Jobs made him a bet: I’ll take you to lunch and we’ll count all the square corners and all the rounded corners.

Bill conceded by the time they got the menus at the restaurant, and figured out how to draw rounded corners as fast as square ones.

I love em, rounder the better I say, give me a phone with the profile of a hot dog bun. Better yet a circle. Yeah I want a folding phone where it’s a circle and it expands from the center into a bigger circle.

Idk if this is firefox or specifically waterfox thing, but it has many settings for style of the tabs, buttons etc. There is rounding of corners, spacing, and more.
