I don’t get it. According to Wikipedia, Patrick Star is simply named Patrick Étoile in French. What’s up with Patrique here!?

I love how it’s the “-que” which has the very french spelling, but it was probably the “r” that contained the heavy french accent.

I grew up with all French comics and cartoons, and it’s so weird watching native englishers call like Tintin’s dog “Snowy” or call Tintin “Tintin” for that matter.

Take a look at the trailer for Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin (a delightful movie, even though I had a really hard time getting used to these characters speaking English) and listen to the way Tintin pronounces his own name in English:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiPUce42iww

I can only assume that the way he says it in the movie is the normal way it’s said in English and indeed, that sounds weird.

I just guess it’s about French pronunciation. The tin is pronounced with a nasal long open vowel instead of a clear n.

PS you can go to french Wikipedia entry for Tintin and listen to it.

I could not find it on the wikipedia but I did find other options to listen to it. It does not sound like whatever you wrote earlier. The i is nowhere to be found but the n is really there, just as you said unclear.

In Danish the dog’s called “Terry” (probably because the translator considered that a cute name for a terrier) and has his profession (🤔) listed as “Astronaut, seaman” on Danish Wikipedia 😄

It’s interesting how (for me, at least) “krabby patty” never evoked the idea that Mr Krabs is a cannibal, but somehow the phrase “pâté de crabe” makes that idea inescapable.
