Voyagers is here!
It’s crazy to read all the features that creeped into Star Citizen that caused it to delay release into the next 50 years, but is effortlessly added into NMS on a smaller dev team within a few years
And Elite Dangerous has had fans wanting walkable ship interiors for a decade or so. NMS ‘here you go and craft your own ship to boot’ ! There’s been rather a lot of cross-pollination between the two, but this round goes to NMS by landslide, assuming it works as advertised, and sight unseen I’ll assume so given past efforts. NMS, the game that keeps giving.
Except NMS didn’t simply add interiors as useless eye candy like the ED community wants; it has actual gameplay implications other than selling cosmetics.
You are not wrong. The beauty is NMS is owner run, no investors ‘making it better’, likely to keep being good jut coz they like doing it.
And they’re still wanting, because last time I looked E:D still hasn’t got 'em. Very specific sections of your fleet carrier, yes. Very specific sections of space stations, yes. Your normal ship, no.
If you have VR you can float around your ship’s cockpit (including leaving old Ichabod sitting in the pilot’s seat, sans his head) but nothing is rendered outside of this and the details are pretty sparse, nor can anything in there be interacted with. But to be fair, I’m not sure what gameplay purpose this would actually serve given how E:D is structured.
Elite Dangerous is more of a Space Flight Sim, rather than a Space Life Sum, but they do add elements of Space Life, and the game was kind of originally marketed as a Space Life sim. Honestly, walkable ship interiors would be cool, but yeah, there really isn’t much reason for them to be added.
I think the main 2 things that Elite has going for itself are the 1:1 realistically scaled galaxy and the art direction. Very few other games can so beautifully simulate what it feels like to be on a lone exo planet, 50000 light-years away from Sol.
I kind of bounced off of No Man’s Sky, and it was mostly because of the visuals. It was too cartoony for my tastes, but I should really give it another go.
There’s an indie game called Rodina. A lot like NMS in a lot of ways, and very different in a lot of ways. The number 1 reason I wanted it originally was that you could build a starship and walk around in it freely, and land that ship in real time and just exit or not like in NMS. It’s a fantastic game though.
As a Star Citizen player, I’m all for other games stepping up with some real competition.
I can’t wait to hop back in to No Mans Sky and check out this update.
That being said, this isn’t an update that has implemented all of what makes Star Citizen stand out. We still don’t have hundreds of players able to congregate on a single ship. AI pathing/tactics in NMS is very basic. We don’t have cities/interiors on the scale that Star Citizen has. A single planet doesn’t have much of a variance to their biomes (no mixes of tundra/desert, forest, high altitude, low altitude, wetland etc.). We’re mostly limited to just Cave, Surface, and Underwater biomes.
I’m hoping that we start to see more complex planets with the work being done on Light No Fire. I’m definitely looking forward to future updates on this game.
All of the things you mentioned make the game extremely buggy, so NMS is still ahead.
But No Man’s Sky is an actual game and not a multi-million dollar grift.
Hey, hey, hey. Planet surfaces can have up to two biomes now.
You seem to have misread the comment you’re replying to. They didn’t say this update implemented all of what makes Star Citizen stand out. They’re saying that Hello Games is consistently rolling out new features in a timely manner, whereas Star Citizen’s new features seem to only prolong that game’s already very long development cycle.
And I’d just like to add that NMS has features that Star Citizen doesn’t have, like being a fully functioning, released game and not a perpetual alpha. Sure, it doesn’t have a bartender AI or bedsheet physics, but it also didn’t cost $800+ million to develop, so some cuts are to be expected. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
…there are things that make Star Citizen stand out? Like, in a positive way? They must have done some real work on that game since launch.
Launch? Did you mean lunch?
You can walk around the interior, customize the interior and seamlessly EVA.
This goes beyond anything I could have expected.
Yeah, I know people have asked for something like this for a while now. I never expected it to happen.
I wonder if this applies to all current starship designs or only the specific class.
Only the new class of ships, Corvettes. There are some YouTubers streaming it. Corvette building looks like ship building in Starfield.
Interior of what? Newbie here
Why the ship of course. We can get up and walk around inside in the new corvettes.
I’m starting to assemble my corvette and I’ve never thought I’d say something like that, but I prefer the Starfield assembly screen.
Honestly, I think the mechanisms in NMS and Starfield are both serviceable but not perfect.
What’s funny is I was literally about to reinstall Starfield because I haven’t played the latest update and was in the mood to play around with the ship building again. Then this NMS update came out…
Starfield has the problem with where the doors will be and the confusion with the weapons classes/types. In NMS I don’t like that you need to buy everything in a different screen before assembling them.
Yeah, that’s annoying.
Honestly, I’ve taken a break from ship building at the moment because I’ve run into a handful of bugs with the parts in my inventory, e.g. the same parts no longer stacking, parts not showing up in the builder, etc. Hopefully these will get resolved soon.
I played NMS a couple of years ago. The seemless transition from planet to space, the vastness of the galaxy and a lot of the gameplay elements kept me playing for several hours. But after that it felt like the game was not super deep gameplay-wise and I cannot find motivation in just decorating planets.
Obviously, I missed several updates since then but I am wondering whether the progression and gameplay got more depth to it?
The developers seem to be really sophisticated and I am very thankful for how they maintain and support their game.
yeah it’s weird, from the very beginning of development i had this feeling that it just didn’t feel compelling to me. it looked very impressive but there was like… nothing interesting to do. and i played noctis back in the day, space tourism is always compelling to me, but nms just feels… trivial for some reason. like playing with a toddler’s activity center.
it’s such a small thing but the first thing that tipped me off that something was off was the first e3 trailer way back, when the player in the video jumps into a ship with a long, narrow nose and that nose is not visible from the cockpit.
I think a major point in terms of motivation is that the procedural generation is too homogenic. The planets differ too less, such that after only a few hours, the inital sensation wears off and you basically have already seen everything relevant there is out there. Maybe this has changed but this was especially a big factor for me why I lost interest quite quickly.
when i finally picked it up a few years ago on gog i didn’t even get as far as that. i did the tutorial, flew to a second planet, and promptly got stuck in a tree, which was very funny.
the main thing that made me stop was how light everything felt. everything felt… flimsy, like the digital equivalent of those knock-off gas station transformer toys that whitened at the joints when you played with them as a kid.
…that may be too specific a reference. point being, i want space ships to feel weighty and solid.
I think that’s a fair assessment. NMS’s gameplay is broad, not deep whereas something like Starfield is deep, not broad. If you don’t like the sandbox parts of the game, like base building, I can understand why it’s not your favorite. That being said, I think it’s worth revisiting from time to time to check out the new features and expeditions.
I’ve played every expedition and will usually play that save for a little bit after the expedition is over, building bases, maxing out my freighter, etc. Then I move on to another game until the next major update or expedition. Overall it’s a fairly chill game and the community is nice.
If you don’t like the sandbox parts of the game, like base building, I can understand why it’s not your favorite.
In my opinion the bad of NMS is that you have a lot of game mechanics but they don’t link together, not the fact that there are sandbox parts in the game.
Every aspect is on its own which, while not bad in itself, is probably a limiting factor in the long run since in the end they feel somewhat shallow even if they have a lot of potential to link with something else and despite being sandbox.
I was telling my son how this game on launch was so negatively received when it was released almost a decade ago and how I’m continually blown away by these guys. Still releasing content 9 years later and it’s always solid. In a world full of shit AAA games I’d like to think Hello has earned a spot in the hall of fame for myself. Only other example I have is Sea of Thieves but they monetized the shit out of their game so can’t really compare them.
Ok, NOW Im interested again. 10 years later.
How do you start this? expedition terminal says there are no current expeditions
Now it sounds like the expedition may not start until Wednesday so they can tackle some bugs first. I’d say just keep an eye out for it.
The Corvette Expedition doesn’t start until Friday but you can build and hunt for Corvette parts now. The expedition just gets you some exclusive rewards and is going to center around the new building mechanic.
Bro 😭😭 they called the new suit “skyborn” they’re not even trying to be subtle
Todd Howard is screaming and throwing up rn
welp there goes another 50 hours
Is anyone else having problems with the Xbox series X version? Just getting a Black screen, but the music and the UI sounds are in the background. Am i the only one?
Me too.
Guess we will have to wait for 6.0.1 :-)
Can someone explain how community expeditions work?
I don’t have any friends and I can’t play timed events, because I have other priorities. Can I play this? Can I keep doing whatever I do on NMS while playing this expedition? How long does an expedition take?
Expeditions run for anywhere from 4-8 weeks, but they usually only take a dozen hours or less to actually do. I’ve been able to dedicate a few hours on a weekend and do the whole thing in a session or two. If you’re familiar with the game’s systems, it makes things easier, since you already know what to do to accomplish most of the goals. Plus, you can now convert an existing save to a expedition save and bring some of your equipment and supplies over. Once you’re done, you can convert back and bring your stuff back, along with any new things you found. They’ve made it pretty easy to engage with.
Yes; I do everything solo, for the most part. They’re generally pretty easy.
If you have a save you consider your “main” I recommend using that character to start the expedition at the nexus.
Its not a “timed event,” per se, the expedition will be active for six weeks. You are able to return to the nexus and go back to your main save at any point and continue the expedition again in the future picking up where you left off. So if you have other stuff you need to do like harvest plants at your base you can go to the nexus, go back to the main save to grab your stuff, and then go back into the expedition when you’re ready without any hitch. You can also bring a limited number of items with you to the expedition if you start in the nexus, and you can bring stuff back to your main save when you finish the same way. Thats why I recommend starting on a save you already have.
You’ll start basically a new save with your character and follow the story to unlock rewards. You respawn on a random planet and have to go find your ship to repair it and start the expedition proper, then once you’re in the air you can start doing the expedition goals to get power ups for this “new” character and unlock expedition awards as you complete all the goals in each tier. (You can return to the nexus after doing your first warp jump to get your stored resources and tech)
Usually its simple stuff like harvest a bunch of plants or scan some number of plants and animals and then as you go further along they get more specialized around the specific expedition.
You and your friends can play in your own saves and join each other at any point to complete objectives in tandem without impeding your private progress or requiring you to both be on the same step. And as long as you can play NMS you have access to all updates and dlc.
Hopefully this answers most of your questions and gives you a platform to dive in! Imo this is one of the most impressive updates I’ve seen outside of worlds 2. You definitely want to get in on this!
As shit, I’m redownloading NMS again aren’t I? There goes my next month.
Same. Think Ill just keep it installed on an external HD.
maybe i should give this a shot again. i worry my xbox one or legion go would have trouble though. played it years ago. loved it. but my “push” to keep playing fell off once I had basically infinite money and no more story.
It runs at a pretty steady 40fps on Steam Deck and is really enjoyable, no doubt it’ll be a decent experience on Legion Go.
Holy hell. Not what I was expecting at all.
Will this be available on the Nintendo Switch 1 version?
They have never content locked any expansions before, so I would presume so. Everything still works on the OG PS4 version too.
Granted you get better graphics on faster hardware.
