Get your shortnames while the getting’s good.
If nothing else we know this project will piss off Elon and that’s always a plus.
If not decentralized, it’s a no go…
Twitter was awful before Musk bought it. Hard pass.
Ah yes, just what the world needs: another Twitter.
hahaha, this is the first thing I though after the idiot changed the iconic name to nothing, go twitter! (no, I’m not joining bluebird, but I like the trust threshold idea)
The site looks vibe coded. It’s possible they just bought the trademark, quickly set up a site and hope to capitalize on the reputation of former Twitter.
The $20 and $40 early access certainly makes it seem like it. Even if that isn’t the case, time has shown that centralized social media has flaws so idealists will just stay with Mastodon while the people that want a large user base and easy of use will just use BlueSky instead. IMO there is no market aside from a possible gofundme-invention type exit scam.Paid early access? I think I’ll pass…
Finally Twitter’s name and logo isn’t a ripoff of the X Windowing System(maybe)
I still call elon’s BBS twitter (on purpose).
Lol. It’d be hilarious if this succeeded. It was so dumb of Musk to change the name.
Why? You don’t find it convenient to say “X, formerly Twitter”? I think it just rolls off the tongue! /s
Most of what musk does is dumb.
Most of what musk does is dumb.
People are dumber than him though, for example there are plenty of idiots here who share content from his platforms
He didn’t get rich from being smart.
I assume he got rich how most people get rich, luck and being a sociopath.
also having a lot of money to start out with helps
And an apartheid era emerald mine
aka luck
And also by being a vaporware scam artist. Thunderf00t on YouTube has a whole collection of videos showcasing Musk’s whole repertoire of bullshit.
yea… that’s pretty much all Thunderfoot posts about nowadays… he hella fell off, for multiple reasons. But like, a decade ago he used to talk about scam kickstarters, atheism, interesting science topics, etc. And then in those debunking science videos he would bring the math and receipts that made it fun to watch… But then in the past 5 years it’s just been Elon… nearly every video is about Elon. It’s obsessive.
And tbf, that’s not the only ick around Thunderfoot. I mean, he did kinda get his start during the Anti-SJW culture war shit doing anti-femisist ragebait videos. Basically occupied the same spaces as Sargon, Bearing and GradeAunderA… and he’s never really “grown” out of that, or addressed it, let alone apologized for it. He harps on Elon, and sometimes Trump/AlexJones/StevenCrowder but he’s never really talked about how he and his ilk helped bring them about.
His latest video was exploring ‘anti-baking soda’ as a potential novel way to do CO2 capture at scale.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=fvxNmStSC3M
He also ‘got his start’ before Anti-SJW youtube was a thing. His first series that popped off, back in the day, the day being 2008ish, was "Why do People Laugh at Creationists?'.
I don’t know that he ever … explicitly collabed with Sargon or any of those guys, but yeah he did exist in roughly the same genre-space, around the GamerGate era of i dunno, 2013 to 2015, ish?
While he has covered Elon a lot, thats because he started calling bullshit on Elon’s nonsense since way, way before that was common… he’s been tooting his own horn a bit, following around 10 years of Elon’s trolls telling him he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and well, it turned out he did.
He literally has a personal grudge against Elon Musk.
For all his faults, he is one of the oldest, OG youtubers, since damn near day 1, who is also still around, and hasn’t imploded.
His first vid is 19+ years old, so, 2007ish, and its calling out GWB as a war mongering liar.
All that being said, if you want a more recent youtube channel thats basically just mostly been tearing Musk to shreds, with science: Common Sense Skeptic.
By ‘more recent’ I mean they’ve only been around for 5 or 6 years, I think.
Not to mention that he milks this content to extreme, he can say things which would take 1 minute in 10
Was unaware of much of that; how disappointing. That being said, what I’ve watched about Musk was informative.
Mostly inherited wealth, but also those things.
A surprising number of people do not understand how getting rich works. Literally anyone can do it. You simply need to do whatever everyone else refuses to do.
You take on the risks. You debase yourself you compromise any and all ethics. You removed out for shareholders who will give you endless money to shield them from consequences they directly funded.
It’s profitable because there is always demand for a new villain and damn near nobody wants to do it. For a good fucking reason.
You seem to be mistakenly conflating getting rich with increasing wealth. Just about nobody gets rich. Many people leverage their existing wealth to gain more. Frequently, that exchange is the start of what is now defined as enshitification.
Everyone cannot do it. Fundamentally its easy: Have money and pick something to middleman. Waste capital until you ‘disrupt’ that flow. ???. Maybe profit. Who the fuck cares? You got yours. Repeat.
Simple: have wealth. Easy.
Step one is have money to make money. Aside from being the result of two wealthy people fucking… care to detail how so many people are checking that box?
Certainly - there ARE paths to wealth… but they are rare, risk heavy, and frequently are destined to be prey to a resource rich competitor.
Are you rich? Where’s your Bugatti?
It’s in the shop. In Canada. But totally real. You just can’t see it right now because it’s in the shop. In Canada.
You take on the risks.
It’s easier to take on the risks when you’re already rich from inherited wealth.
A lot of it has to do with over-promising and under-delivering. The rest is marketing.
I’m hearing ‘once you have money do…’
Care to tell me where that gullible userbase is coming from? Pray, tell - what do they come for?
Before that is even a factor you must either be first - with research and development … and manufacturing… and distribution… or better. Or cheaper! Or able to undercut the competition.
Of the things mentioned… I seem to be struggling to find the element lacking a substantial financial investment.
Care to tell me where that gullible userbase is coming from?
They’re not all gullible. A lot of VC types are obsessive gamblers, they’ll throw money at anything that sounds like it might have a high return.
Pray, tell - what do they come for?
That’s where the marketing comes in. Elon is pretty good at selling these big ideas, making them sound futuristic and world-changing. He not only sells those ideas to VCs, but also to the government. A lot of his businesses have pulled in substantial government contract money. The public rarely gets any return from those tax dollars.
VC won’t give you the time of day if you lack a product or platform. This isnt go-fund-me or r/wsb. VC appear to bet big but are frequently pretty well informed and diversified. Their big bets aren’t much from their prospective… and frequently will be the first to squeeze “their due” from a failing venture.
I dont see how Elon makes a good example for this. If anything it supports what I said:
Elon is wealthy. He has a platform. He has shit he’s bought and is reselling snake oil from those things. He’s not poofing something from nothing.
Most? Can anyone name anything smart he’s done in years?
Finally deleted she who shall not be named from my address book.
Do I win?
I used to be surprised at how stupid billionaires can be. But, then I remembered they don’t actually do anything where they work, and the real employees run behind them and clean up their messes. When they stick their fingers in the works, they fuck it up, Cybertruck being one example.
Third generation curse.
I personally believe the cybertruck was a designer who was making fun of musk. He submitted a pinewood derby car he made when he was 7.
Its the literal emperors new clothes.
I hope this takes off and people start using “tweet” and “twitter” again and it makes “x” completely irrelevant like his Hitler salute should have
Edit: it cost $20 to join?! I’m out
it cost $20 to join?! I’m out
Yep, I can’t spend the money now, which is probably true for a lot of people, and I’m definitely gonna forget this is a thing by the time it’s free or I have the money, which is probably true for a lot of people.
Edit: it cost $20 to join?! I’m out
Well, they need something to pay the lawyers with once Musk takes notice.
Edit: I’ve just discovered this interesting concept called “reading the article” and found out that they’ve already been sued, though it’s still not entirely settled.
I’ve just discovered this interesting concept called “reading the article”
Spread the word my brother! You’ve got to let everyone know about this new fad!
I read it but honestly, probably 80% of the time I do not. Because articles are very often full of pop ups and ads and tracking and paywalls, and are unnecessarily verbose (most can be summarized in 1-2 sentences), and are just republishing someone else’s work while adding nothing, and simultaneously devoid of useful information or any actual sources.
Some of that can be solved with Firefox and unblock.
100% can be solved by knowingly making a glaringly obviously false claim about the topic and someone will correct you in a dickish tone while citing the article
Your grandad’s AI summary, if you will.
I’ve seen AI summaries that looked like the AI had not read the article.
Works for me 😏
I’ve just discovered this interesting concept called “reading the article”
What dark magic is this
I’ve just discovered this interesting concept called “reading the article”
This is liberal propaganda FAKE NEWS
Edit: I’ve just discovered this interesting concept called “reading the article”
Jokes aside: I think it’s great that you read the article, then went back to both acknowledge that it covered your point and admit that you didn’t before.
I’ve just discovered this interesting concept called “reading the article”
Wait. Is that allowed?
How do I learn this power?
This here is an excellent guide:

vibe coded slop asking for $20 bucks to sign up… i think I’m okay
Oh fuck this is embarrassing
That site was blocked by spectrum when I tried it
Lol
Probably a pre-emptive block to stop scam sites from using domain that are similar.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many em dashes ever. Not even in the most copy/paste AI slop wall of text. Holy moly.
Wow you were not kidding. Some of them are extra awkward and unnatural too, it’s almost a parody of what slop text looks like.
We believe people should have more control over what they see — and more transparency about the information in front of them.
An early illustration of the idea — you decide how much low-trust noise reaches your feed:
You can’t pay me enough to click on that link.
Edit: it cost $20 to join?! I’m out
They probably need the money to pay for their AI-based “fact-checking”:
A new and notable feature is the automated fact-checking tool, a Gemini-based “veracity engine for real-time analysis” (“Vera” for short), which runs on every tweet.
Using a technology that’s known for making shit up, for fact-checking, is so dumb, but it will probably bring in investors because AI.
Do they expect everything posted to be just news and information that can be fact-checked? Is this AI going to fact-check my opinions and shitposts too?
The homepage feels like AI slop too.
“I just watched movie. It sucked!”
“Beep boop. According to trustworthy, verifiable sources, movie does not suck. Sanction : immediate ban.”
AI is very good at classification
Every tweet
Poop emoji - this has been fact checked but can not be independently verified due to lack of context
Edit: it cost $20 to join?! I’m out
…As a “founder”; we’ll see how long that lasts
but til then at least, I’m out too
it cost $20 to join?
Shit, that’s twice as much as it used to cost to join Something Awful, and I bet you don’t even get access to furry porno.
Sounds like a grift.
I’d still be hesitant if they paid me 20$ to join.
Are we sure it’s not mostly still bots on Twitter? I deleted my account back then and have not been back.
At least, not willingly back, since some people still hyperlink to Twitter directly rather than just sharing screenshots of whatever the content was. So you click the text hyperlink thinking it’s to a web article, only for it to bring you to some random string of tweets visibly displayed in the least logical order.
Oh I’m positive it’s mainly bots and morons on x
people start using “tweet” and “twitter” again
I never stopped
No one else did either
I called it X-twitter. I didn’t really use “tweet” though; mostly because I tend to talk about toots more than tweets.
I tend to talk about my toots after I eat a can of spicy chili beans right out the can
what what term do people use for tweets on shitter now? just “posts”?
x-crete
Xhit
Tweets
Dude reread that post.
“I hope this takes off and makes the Nazi platform irrelevent….but not for $20. I’m okay with Nazis for $20.”
I’m poor.
Same. I’m not calling you cheap. I’m pointing out that saying $20 to pop a Nazi’s balloon shouldn’t be an offensive ask.
Yeah, everyone is outraged at being a product when using free services, but then also outraged at paid ones.
I’m a bit suspicious of how they want to implement scoring, I feel like it’s either going to be gamed by users or rigged by owners, but otherwise it looks fine as an idea and as a replacement for xitter
Given that it’s charging an entry fee right now, and is VC backed and corpo controlled…
Probably a fash - or at least neoliberal - app already. The enemy of my enemy is my enemy’s enemy, no more and no less.
Let them eat eachother.
I hope that Mastodon takes off and makes the Nazi platform irrelevant. For free. Independently of corporate and investor goodwill.
$20 isn’t just $20 in most countries around the world.
For some it is more than they can make in a month. Tho those people probably never seen the Internet.
So, I’m just checking…
- It is not open source?
- It uses AI to “Fact-Check”?
- It costs 20$ to join, and possibly more later?
Well, they have chosen interesting path those people behind this thing.
This will never amount to more than a cash grab.
Sadly, true.
If only it was just a Mastodon instance (was thinking about creating “Twatter”, as a joke).
They’ll fail pretty quickly I bet, so the Mastodon instance could still happen later!
sounds like Shitler himself launched the “new site” for some extra money grabbing.
- Cash grab on an old name and hoping people pony up the $20 to join it.
- Not using ActivityPub or ATProto.
Yeah, it’s already DOA.
If anyone is serious about creating a new centralised social network these days, they have already lost.
and the sign up doesn’t even work, just 404s
Oh lol. It must have been because their firebase tokens were exposed and people were able to get around the waitlist/payment and sign up for an account.
Take a look: https://x.com/Patrosi73/status/2093079851393524087 (I would link to Xcancel/Nitter… but space karen decided to wig out)
Shame. A new Twitter that supports all the open protocols would have been cool. Fediverse with a name people recognise.
Isn’t that just Mastodon?
Mastodon is not called Twitter, and the vast majority of people have no idea what it is, unfortunately. A Mastodon instance called Twitter would be a great idea, although I think Mastodon doesn’t support all the protocols like Friendica does. But Friendica is too unlike Twitter.
I suppose that could potentially drag Mastodon’s developer into a legal fight (if X were to sue them), which would be costly and a distraction.
Not mastodon devs but the instance owners
I have a feeling that Musk is gonna sue who he’s gonna sue.
Mh yeah you are quite right i guess, he’s dumb and rich
It may well be intended as a serious attempt but personally I’m just going to view it as trolling/a gimmick, in which case I don’t care how shit the actual platform is. Seems to be more about making a point against Musk than getting a serious userbase.
Somewhere in there is step 3: profit
I want to start a business that fleeces these rubes, how does an average man break into the bullshit game
Would be funny if Twitter/X Supports ATProto. Maybe also don’t give up the X Brand and you could interact with Bluesky users or twitter or X Handles and if you Bridge to the Fediverse yeah that works to. I could really delete my x/Twitter Profile and say. Hey My new Handle is my bridged Mastodon Account.
2022: Come on, it’s just 8$ it’s basically the price of a coffee.
2026: Come on, it’s just 20$ it’s basically the price of a coffee.
2030: Come on, it’s just 50 bottle caps, it’s basically the price of a coffee.
2050: What’s coffee?
:(
Literally every year since the internet was created: the dollar sign goes before the number, my dude.
Didn’t know since we don’t follow this convention where I’m from.
Shrugs
Every one of these symbols goes before the number: $€£¥₹
Where are you from where it comes after? What currency do you use?
The only time this comes after the number, that I am aware of, is when you use abbreviations like USD or EUR instead of the symbol.
It’s language specific. In english it comes before the number. In many other languages it comes after.
Where are you from? In English it’s always the case that you put the dollar sign before the number.
The dollar sign in English, maybe. But other languages and currencies have the symbol after the value, so it’s easy to get confused
I understand that it’s different in other languages, but I often see this behavior from native US Americans who only speak English.
Is it that relevant in this day and age? I was taught you put £ (or whatever currency you’re using) first when you’re writing so Johnny Fraudster can’t turn your 100£ into 1100£.
That all feels a bit immaterial on the web.
Hence the underline under the 00 cents/pence on a check/cheque.
Yes, it’s relevant in this day and age, because it’s still incorrect to do it the other way (at least in English and with $£¥ and a couple others, as another commenter pointed out).
When I read “20$” my first thought is that the person writing it didn’t pay attention in elementary school.
And being lenient about it on the web leads to the behavior leaking into the real world on things like shop signs.
Don’t even get me started on people who (mostly IRL) write things like “0.99¢” which makes me want to give them a cent and tell them to keep the change.
I don’t speak english natively. That’s why I didn’t know, yeah.
Now think about how much worse it is for every non-English western language! But good luck with your endeavour.
Thanks! Yeah I guess it might be hard for some people, but I speak some French and Spanish and it’s not hard for me to remember to ¡use proper exclamation points in Spanish! or «use guillemets instead of quotation marks in French». This feels like the same sort of thing.
It seems like maybe the commenters here thus far are missing the (obvious from the title) fact that this is not affiliated with Musk or “X” at all? I admire the aggressiveness of this move and I’ll be rooting for them.
Seems pretty obvious it’s not related to Musk or X. However, it’s just another proprietary social network. We are all familiar with the pattern now. Proprietary network and investors eventually means enshitification.
