AI will cure cancer before human scientists.

Not because it’s smart or will figure it out on its own. It’s just a lot better at aggregating completely disparate pieces of information. A scientist researching in one field doesn’t hold the the whole body of knowledge of other fields. So it takes time to piece the bits together.

This is why discoveries are often made near simultaneously in different parts of the globe by different people. Just enough information gathered in just the right locations seen by people with the appropriate amount of knowledge.

With AI, that last bit gets faster and it will get the credit.

At this rate AI will cure it by having everyone die off of corporate greed and there being nobody left to have cancer.

With the type of AI they are creating? Probably the best you’ll get is a paper containing a ton of misinformation that sounds correct combined with already established facts/research.

GenAI can easily regurgitate anything in its training data, but you ask it something about the coding language you just created and it’ll bullshit you because it cannot work without you feeding it training data on said language. It’s very much so like a human in that you ask someone to answer a question about something outside of what they know and they cannot reliably give you a correct answer outside of sheer dumb luck.

Of course the good human will hopefully comes to not knowing.

GenAI has an unfortunate tendency to output consistent sounding stuff with high apparent confidence that means nothing at all. Which still can be useful in a context where the “correctness” can be objectively validated like certain software development tasks, but terrible for anything where the output cannot be automatically verified. Have to decide if it helps you research more concretely, the output doesn’t actually matter if it is wrong

They don’t actually care about curing cancer, they just use it to justify their existence. If they did cure cancer they’d hide it or figure out how to monetize the fuck out of it.

Reminds me of a two sentence horror I read a few years back:

“I wish there was a cure for cancer!”

“Why waste your wish on something that already exists?”

The world’a leading oncologist lives in Cuba, and the American terrorist regime is happy to let him die there with the rest of their people and culture. Pharma execs are still sneaking into the island to interview him though. I think he did make a lung cancer vaccine recently.

Well, here’s the thing, you can’t cure cancer. Cancer is just a type of a many different things, all requiring very different avenues of potential “cure”.

To cure cancer, like it’s a singular, is like the DNA equivalent of “finding the cure for mental illness”.

So whenever you hear it on the forefront of something, you know it’s bullshit narrative.

Excuse me? Explain, if you can, how systematically destroying all life and turning the world into an uninhabitable waste hostile to even the most resilient microbe wouldn’t also eradicate cancer? Checkmate, atheists.

neither of those are helpful. apparently that one article stating the diagnosis for cancer wasnt that useful, it required radiologists/oncologist to re-review it again and again, plus they had to use quite a large number of scans too, and the possibility of hallucinating is there too. they already are using AI in DENTAL spaces, where they "detect’ defects in a tooth and the patients accused the dentist of the tooth damage not being present when they went with 2nd, 3rd opinion.

“AI” cannot and shall not cure cancer. There isn’t even such a thing as “cancer”. That’s just a name we give to a whole family of illnesses that share similar traits. They all have very different causes, different profiles, different risks and different ways of treating them.

For a lot of them, they are hard to treat once they get beyond a certain point. That’s why a lot of modern research is focused on early diagnosis and prevention. Especially with mRNA vaccines proving to be highly effective at taking away certain risk factors that cause some types of cancer. There’s also no such thing as curing cancer. Cancer can be treated, it can be removed, but it can never be cured. It isn’t like other diseases where it can be fully cured. Even if the cancer itself has been fully removed, the risk factors that lead to the cancer still exist. So we say people are in remission and have a certain likelihood of getting the same cancer again in the future. Again, this is why there is so much focus on preventing the disease in the first place. And the truth is, some risk factors are very hard to take away. So most likely some forms of cancer will always be present. This is especially true for the majority of the world who don’t have a lot of money. People living in places with bad pollution and poor air quality are at risk and usually can’t really do anything about that. There is no curing that, that’s a fact of life.

So like most of the things these AI psychopaths are talking about applies to their very small group of insanely rich people, who rule the world in their future vision, because the robots rule the world and they rule over the robots. They want the AI to fix cancer for them and fix aging, so they can hoard their power and money forever. It’s also funny how they say the AI will fix global warming and cure cancer. Well we could start by stopping to build and power all these datacenters. Stop them from running their gas burning generators, that pollute the air. It would be funny if it weren’t so very sad.

This isn’t to say machine learning algorithms can’t contribute to cancer research, they for sure can. But LLMs not so much and just calling the whole thing AI and treating it like it’s some kind of god being that can magically fix all of our problems is insane. The fucking thing is trained on reddit and 4chan for fucks sake, how is anything good ever going to come from that?

I can’t speak for cancer specifically but a lot of research out there isn’t in easily parseable formats for people to sort through using traditional methods, and LLMs have been pretty helpful for adding to evidence of specific effects to be able to pare down the list of millions of compounds out there to a number that’s worth testing in the research I’ve been a part of. I’m about as skeptical as anyone can be of the use of LLMs in the medical field and try to avoid using them whenever possible but one of the only things they’re good for is parsing more text than any human is capable of in short amounts of time which is unfortunately useful for first passes in a lot of the work that goes into therapeutics development

This doesn’t even seem true. Sam Altman hardly cares about AI’s effect on the climate.

Edit: Oh I just realized this is how he markets AI.

I’m not a huge conspiracy guy, but I’m sorry, there is absolutely zero fucking chance there’s no cure for cancer and a dozen other things. They developed vaccinations, antibiotics, ect before the first half of the 19th century. They did this on a bunson burners and petry dishes. These pieces of shit take in BILLIONS in donations a year and have access do gene resequencers, supercomputers, and modeling programs BUT still can’t make a dent over the last 60 years. Absolute bullshit.

I’m sorry, there is absolutely zero fucking chance there’s no cure for cancer and a dozen other things.

This belief occurs because the general population has a misconception of what cancer really is. Cancer is not a single illness with a single cause. It’s a group of diseases associated with error in different aspects of our DNA that control how cells divide and replicate. These errors can happen by mistakes occurring when cells divide, by environmental factors, or be inherited from your parents.

A universal cure would be virtually impossible as there is no universal cause or development of cancer itself.

vaccinations, antibiotics, ect before the first half of the 19th century. They did this on a bunson burners and petry dishes.

They did not develop these types of treatments from first principles. We developed vaccinations over hundreds of years of observation and trial and error. The treatment was utilized before we really knew how or why they worked.

These pieces of shit take in BILLIONS in donations a year and have access do gene resequencers, supercomputers, and modeling programs BUT still can’t make a dent over the last 60 years

This is just absolutely false… In the last 60 years survival rates for breast cancer went from 24% to 77%, bone marrow cancer from 10-20% to 70%, leukemia from 14% to 65%… Nearly any cancer you can think of the survival has doubled to tripled

that might be because controlling random genetic mutation is a bit different than exposing the body to a particular sequence…
